What’s For Breakfast?

Posted by Beth Andrews Feb 20 2012, 4:00 am
Over the past year or so I’ve come to love breakfast with a passion that is sort of frightening. Every Sunday I spend half of the morning making scones or muffins or omelets or waffles for my family and I had my mother throw me a birthday brunch instead of birthday dinner party. My husband even took me out for breakfast for Valentine’s Day instead of doing the romantic dinner for two thing *g*
To celebrate my adoration for all things breakfast, I thought we’d do a quick Breakfast Q&A!
1. Coffee, tea or juice?
2. Pancakes, waffles or French toast?
3. Eggs – scrambled, fried or poached?
4. Bagel, English muffin or toast?
5. Bacon, sausage or ham?
6. Donut, danish or fresh fruit?
7. Muffin, scone or coffee cake?
8. Cereal – cold or hot?
9. Omelet or quiche?
10. Favorite Breakfast indulgence?
Can’t wait to read everyone’s answers…after I’ve eaten, of course

Looks like the Golden Rooster will be joining you for breakfast – though I’m guessing he’ll pass on the omelet *g*
He does love his coffee, though!
Congrats on catching the rooster, Infiniteh!

I’ve never been to Shoneys but I’m all for a breakfast bar!
Oooh, what fun, Beth! Again, we’re sisters under the skin – I LOVE breakfast!

Hash Browns… I know that sounds bad, but I love them.
Mozette, I adore hash browns but I do try to be good and let my husband order them so I only eat a few. Love them!
Hugs on the tooth problem. Hope you feel better soon!
Yeah, hash browns are a nice, crunchy evil aren’t they? Can be a little on the greasy side if they’re not fresh enough though.
As for my tooth? Well, I’m off to the dentist tomorrow afternoon… hopefully it’s only from what I’ve been eating, if it’s a filling, well, I hope it’s not a bad one.
I like hash browns, too. And home fries with ketchup.
Beth, the dh and I love eating breakfast out. We honeymooned in San Francisco and started the first day of our marriage with a champagne brunch at the Hilton. It was way more food than we could eat but included just about anything a person might want for breakfast.
I love custom omelets, fruit, and yogurt. Wouldn’t turn uo my nose at scones, pancakes, or waffles, though, and I like a lot of cereals.
My parents gave us a waffle iron for a wedding gift. The dh got into making waffles, and we enjoy having people for brunch. The waffle iron wore out about 5 years ago, but immediately replaced it. He makes a blueberry compote for the waffles that’s out if this world. Marrying a former cook is a pretty good deal, I have to say.
Marrying a former cook is a pretty good deal, I have to say
LOL, Nancy! I’d say that’s a great deal *g*
I love our waffle iron – it was handed down to me from my mother-in-law. As I said, the recipe I found yesterday made great waffles – flavorful with just a hint of sweetness and crispy on the outside. We had ours with bananas and walnuts though I told my husband I’d make blueberry ones next. I’ll have to get your husband’s recipe for that blueberry compote
Off topic but I think San Francisco is a fabulous honeymoon destination!
I’ll put the recipe in the Members area.
Thanks, Nancy! And thanks to your husband as well
Late for work, so
Tea!
Scrambled eggs, heavy on the salsa
Fried potatoes.
And right now I’m snarfing down cocoa puffs.
And right now I’m snarfing down cocoa puffs
LOL, Gillian! I’ve been known to dig into a bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch *g* Thanks for stopping by before work!
Here are my own answers:
1. Coffee with lots and lots and lots of cream (I tell people I drink cream with coffee *g*)
2. French toast. Nice thick slices topped with fresh fruit and warm syrup. Yum!
3. Love them all!
4. Prefer a bagel with cream cheese.
5. Not big on any of them but will sometimes have a slice of bacon.
6. Fresh fruit.
7. Scones. Love scones!
8. Depends on my mood more than the weather *g*
9. Omelet, heavy on the veggies.
10. Eggs Benedict!
Ooooh! Eggs Benedict! I completely forgot about that! Yummo! And it’s gotta be with the Salmon not the bacon… right? Nice and fresh fish in the morning… .mmmmmm!
Good morning, Beth! I am going to have a hard time answering because I like breakfast food.
We often have breakfast meals in the evening at our house. When I was a girl, Gram would have pancake suppers once a month and we had anything from corn (really good, actually) to blueberry to blackberry to buckwheat or anything else Gram concocted.
1. Coffee
2. I can’t make pancakes, so use my waffle maker a lot, but love French toast.
3. Scrambled eggs take time, so usually make fried eggs. Bad for cholesterol, but usually have 2 each morning. Fried potatoes are good with scrambled eggs….
4. Bagel, English muffin or toast? Love all 3, but E. M. with lots of butter and honey.
5. Bacon
6. Donut
7. Coffee cake; I have scones as a treat with a cup of tea in mid-morning or mid-afternoon.
8. Usually cold cereal, but I like cream of wheat.
9. My husband makes awesome omelets!
10. Favorite Breakfast indulgence—hmmm, that’s a hard one….Maybe boysenberry or black raspberry syrup or jam on a Belgian waffle.
P.S. We like sausage gravy and biscuits in our house, too.
Deb,
I was never a big susage and gravy over biscuit kind of girl, but according to my sister, my dh and my eldest child, my mother’s is the best they’ve ever had.
Deb, we often have breakfast for dinner here, too *g*
I’m quite happy because I’ve found both a pancake recipe and a waffle recipe that are really good and easy to make. Oh, and I have a recipe for blueberry scones that are to die for – now I can’t wait for summer and fresh blueberries!
Beth, I don’t think anyone, ANYONE in the world appreciates breakfast like night shift workers! About 3 am, we start craving protein, eggs and bacon, and by the time we head home we’re so ready to eat! Thank GOD IHOP is open 24 hours. We’ve been known on a night when no one got to eat dinner, to send someone out about 3 or 4 to get breakfast “to go”.
1. Coffee, tea or juice? Juice and tea or Diet Coke
2. Pancakes, waffles or French toast? Waffles then pancakes. The only French toast I like are the ones my hubby makes me.
3. Eggs – scrambled, fried or poached? Fried, over easy if I’m the one making them. Otherwise, I prefer scrambled at restaurants.
4. Bagel, English muffin or toast? Whole wheat toast
5. Bacon, sausage or ham? YES!
6. Donut, danish or fresh fruit? fresh fruit
7. Muffin, scone or coffee cake? YES!
8. Cereal – cold or hot? Cold with fruit. Speical K with strawberries, peaches or bananas.
9. Omelet or quiche? Omelet. I prefer quiche for lunch. Love this omlet they make at a small place in Florida on route 19 2 hours north of Tampa. It’s a western omlet, eggs, cheese, bacon, peppers, and real homefries. Soooooooo good after a bad night at work!
10. Favorite Breakfast indulgence? Bellinis
of course!
Beth, I don’t think anyone, ANYONE in the world appreciates breakfast like night shift workers!
LOL, Suz. I believe you. My husband has some good stories about when he worked third shift (way before we met *g*)
It’s a western omlet, eggs, cheese, bacon, peppers, and real homefries.
Yum! this sounds like the omelet I’d get at the diner where my daughter used to work – it was a veggie omelet with cheese and homefries. So good!
I’m on a greek yogurt kick! I like the plain kind with a spoonful of peanut butter & just a little squeeze of honey. Oh, I swear, it’s like dessert for breakfast. Throw in a handful of blueberries & you’ll never look back. Yum YUM.
Hey, Susan. I often eat Greek yogurt for my mid-afternoon snack though I’ve been known to eat it for lunch. Like you, I add a little bit of local honey but I have a few walnuts on the side (not mixed in!)
I had Greek Yogurt for the first time in NYC last summer. It was plain yogurt with blueberries and thick honey and was amazing!
My older daughter and I love it, PJ. We prefer it over regular yogurt *g*
Breakfast depends upon how much time I have. Most of the time it’s cereal.
1. You’re kidding, right? Coffee, strong but with a rich taste, a bit sweet, with cream.
2. Not a big fan of waffles, but I like to indulge in the other two occasionally.
3. Eggs I like them fried and occasionally, scrambled.
4. I don’t eat a lot of bread products–allergies–but I do love a good English muffin with lots nooks and crannies for the real butter.
5. Bacon, sausage or ham–I like all three, but Bacon is my favorite.
6. fresh fruit
7. Love scones and coffee cake but not for breakfast.
8. Cereal Mostly cold with raisins or cranberry raisins, sliced almonds.
9. I like both Omelets and quiche. Sometimes I fix either for dinner with a salad.
10. There used to be a place that made Cinnamon raisin buns or figure eights with a wonderful glaze. That with coffee was a good breakfast when I was teaching.
On the weekends, my husband makes us breakfast. He’s a great breakfast chef.
Sia McKye OVER COFFEE
Hi, Sia! I’m not surprised by your choice of beverage *g*
On the weekends, my husband makes us breakfast. He’s a great breakfast chef.
Lucky you! My husband would gladly make scrambled eggs but I’d rather make them myself (he doesn’t beat them enough *g*) So I just put him on clean up duty
1. Coffee, tea or juice? Juice and coffee
2. Pancakes, waffles or French toast? French toast
3. Eggs – scrambled, fried or poached? fried with bacon, scrambled with sausage links.

7. Muffin, scone or coffee cake? scone
8. Cereal – cold or hot? do not like cereal at all
9. Omelet or quiche? omelet
10. Favorite Breakfast indulgence? That would be bananas foster
Hey, Dianna! I love bananas Foster! I have a recipe for it that’s pretty good but I’ve never made it for breakfast. I’ll have to do that soon *g*
Mmmmmm…breakfast! My favorite meal of the day. Most mornings I go for the healthy stuff but occasionally I love to indulge and breakfast offers so many delicious temptations!
1. Coffee, tea or juice? – Coffee with Coffee-Mate Italian Sweet Creme liquid creamer.
2. Pancakes, waffles or French toast? – All the above!
3. Eggs – scrambled, fried or poached? – Scrambled. The late dh made the most fabulous scrambled eggs over an open fire when we camped. Eggs, Half ‘n Half, Velveeta Cheese and Garlic. Heaven!
4. Bagel, English muffin or toast? – English Muffin though I’ve recently become attached to Cinnamon Raisin mini-bagels.
5. Bacon, sausage or ham? – Bacon Bacon Bacon!
6. Donut, danish or fresh fruit? – Fruit
7. Muffin, scone or coffee cake? – All the above!
8. Cereal – cold or hot? – Depends on my mood. I eat a lot of oatmeal but also love cold cereals.
9. Omelet or quiche? – Omelet. I prefer quiche later in the day.
10. Favorite Breakfast indulgence? – Waffle House’s Pecan Waffles, my brother’s Eggs Benedict, Bojangles’ Bo-Berry Biscuit, Starbucks’ Cranberry Orange Muffin
The late dh made the most fabulous scrambled eggs over an open fire when we camped. Eggs, Half ‘n Half, Velveeta Cheese and Garlic.
PJ, those sound wonderful! My husband makes us breakfast on the grill every Fourth of July. The last time we did a campfire breakfast, our son was in middle school, he and a bunch of friends slept outside and the next morning, my husband helped them cook breakfast over the fire. They found a nest of baby snakes under a rock near the fire and were holding baby snakes in one hand, toast in the other *g*
I’ve never been to a Waffle House but it sounds like it’d be right up my alley
Greek yogurt and fresh fruit, oatmeal and fresh fruit, or Special K with fresh fruit–one of these makes up my breakfast menu about 98 percent of the time.
When I eat out, I like my eggs scambled with sausage and whole wheat toast. Biscuits with ham or tenderloin are my favorite breakfast indulgence, which I generally limit to Christmas morning and the church breakfast after Easter Sunrise services. I also love blueberry and cranberry muffins, but they too are strictly rationed treats these days.
Janga, we eat a lot of Special K here, too. My daughter loves the almond vanilla one. She eats two to three bowls of it a day
For some reason I can’t eat breakfast. I don’t know what the problem is my stomach just won’t let me. It makes me sad:(
Gail, that is sad! I’m not hungry at all in the morning but during the week I force myself to eat something light about an hour after I get up. On the weekends, I’m happier because I can wait until ten or so before I eat *g*
Nomnomnom! I love breakfast foods!
1. Coffee, tea or juice?
Tea trumps everything but I do like coffee and juice at other times during the day…if there’s no tea.
2. Pancakes, waffles or French toast?
As long as there’s proper maple syrup, I’m not too picky. I like them all.
3. Eggs – scrambled, fried or poached?
Scrambled or fried over easy.
4. Bagel, English muffin or toast?
English muffins all the way! I do love toast…but not if there are english muffins around. I prefer to keep bagels for lunch.
5. Bacon, sausage or ham?
Bacon(streaky or peameal) and sausages!
6. Donut, danish or fresh fruit?
Danish or grapefruit(sometimes with a dash of granulated sugar).
7. Muffin, scone or coffee cake?
Scones or blueberry muffins.
8. Cereal – cold or hot?
Either. Cold – A bowl of Just Right(Canadian version…I understand other countries’ versions have extra um…stuff…in it. Ours is just right. *grin*) with 2% milk. Hot – A bowl of thick lumpy oatmeal with raisins and brown sugar.
9. Omelet or quiche?
For breakfast, omelet. Quiche for later in the day.
10. Favorite Breakfast indulgence?
I don’t know if I have a favourite. I love hash browns. Oh and if there’s bacon, sausages, hash browns, home fries, or scrambled eggs, I add ketchup to them. I also like crêpes. Oh and then there’s awesome leftovers like cold pizza. I once had a fantastic breakfast of a large cold leftover poutine…I think I enjoyed it more than when it was hot and fresh the night before!
Pissenlit, I love oatmeal and often put in dried cranberries or mixed dried fruit. I cook it along with the liquid and it gets all plump and juicy and sooo good *g*
I keep telling myself I should eat leftovers for breakfast but as I’m never hungry until mid-morning, I usually go with cereal, oatmeal or a fried egg sandwich on a light English muffin
Hey Beth!
As you know, I just got back from Mexico. The resort where we stayed had a huge breakfast bar with made to order omelets and lots of fresh fruit. Easy to get addicted to that. My husband rolled out of bed this morning and said – I’ll have a Western omelet with bacon and… He didn’t get to finish due to the pillow cramped over his face
Normally, I have a cold healthy cereal (Kashi) with blueberries followed by my wake-up can of Diet Dr. Pepper
I do love indulging in a large breakfast and then skipping lunch – but that requires that I get up early enough to dress and prepare. Alas – I’m not a morning person…at least not until I have that can of Diet Coke.
Happy eating! OH – and Happy President’s Day!
I love Kashi cereal! Hope you had a great time in Mexico, Donna!
Welcome back, Donna! One of RWA’s conferences had a breakfast bar that did made-to-order omelets – DC, maybe? Anyway, it’s where I discovered my love for tomato and spinach omelets *g*
Beth, what a fun post. I must say I love breakfast too. Remember going out for really indulgent big breakfasts when I lived in the big smoke. Don’t do it so much now – you remind me to take up the pastime again! OK, here’s my answers:
1. Coffee, tea or juice? Tea
2. Pancakes, waffles or French toast? Waffles.
3. Eggs – scrambled, fried or poached? Scrambled.
4. Bagel, English muffin or toast? Toast.
5. Bacon, sausage or ham? Bacon.
6. Donut, danish or fresh fruit? Danish.
7. Muffin, scone or coffee cake? Coffee Cake.
8. Cereal – cold or hot? Bleuch!
9. Omelet or quiche? Omelet.
10. Favorite Breakfast indulgence?
Anything with smoked salmon. Or one of those breakfast places used to do tiny absolutely delicious lamb cutlets with rosemary crust. Seriously delicious. Tender meat you took in one bite basically. Oh, no, my mouth is watering and all I’ve got for breakfast here is dry old toast. Sigh. I must talk to the cabana boys about improving the menu in my writing cave!
Oh, Anna, not dry toast! My daughter has been on a toast kick lately – one slice with peanut butter and one with Nutella *g*
I would love to try smoked salmon. Will keep it in mind the next time we go out for a breakfast treat
1. Coffee, tea or juice? freshly ground strong black coffe
2. Pancakes, waffles or French toast? French toast
3. Eggs – scrambled, fried or poached? eggs, over light
4. Bagel, English muffin or toast? toast
5. Bacon, sausage or ham? bacon
6. Donut, danish or fresh fruit? donuts, danish, fresh fruit in that order lol
7. Muffin, scone or coffee cake? muffin
8. Cereal – cold or hot? cold – hate oat meal
9. Omelet or quiche? omelet and then quiche
10. Favorite Breakfast indulgence? fried eggs, homestyle potatoes, bacon and toast and coffee.
fried eggs, homestyle potatoes, bacon and toast and coffee.
Sounds like the perfect breakfast to me, Catslady!
Beth, I share your adoration/obsession with breakfast. Really, what’s not to love? My mother must have been rehearsing for sainthood or something, because when we were kids she got up every morning and made breakfast for us before school. Now, my mother never ate breakfast, but she thought it was important for us to have it every day.
We rarely had cold cereal, either. There was lots of oatmeal with brown sugar, toast, and eggs (fried or scrambled). Sometimes we had pancakes, waffles or french toast, but that was more often a weekend treat. I have very fond memories of breakfast before school!
My own children only got pancakes, eggs or anything lovely for breakfast on weekends! It was lots of cold cereal, Pop-Tarts, breakfast bars and granola bars for them, along with some English muffins, bagels, toast and fruit. Poor things. Doesn’t seem to have harmed them, but they really got gypped having a mother who worked full-time!
Here are my own answers:
1. COFFEE, all the way. Even though I drink decaf, coffee is essential!
2. Pancakes, but not those yucky white fluffy ones. I like whole wheat with chopped pecans and cinnamon. Yum! I also love buckwheat, sweet potato and oatmeal pancakes. In my opinion, pancakes must be DENSE to rate.
3. Fried eggs, if served on toast or on an English muffin with cheese.
4. English muffin (whole wheat). They have a great texture and add interest to a breakfast plate.
5. Bacon. Although we have given up beef and pork as a family in protest of the egregious factory farming conditions under which the animals suffer, I still lust after bacon. It is just sooooo good!
6. Fruit wins hands-down! favorites are: grapefruit, kiwi, blueberries, peaches, strawberries and pineapple. Only fresh fruit, though. Yummy!
7. Scone, did someone say scone??? I love scones! Though we don’t have easy access to clotted cream, they are also lovely with fresh butter. Mmm….
8. Hot cereal, preferably steel-cut oats. I made some this morning! I was not raised on things like Cream of Wheat or Malt-o-Meal, but on good old-fashioned oatmeal. I do adore grits, as well, but don’t consider them a “cereal”.
9. Quiche wins this one, though I do love a well-prepared omelet. But if quiche is on offer, I’m taking it!
10. My only breakfast indulgence is a trip to IHOP. Though my husband scowls if I order bacon or sausage, I do love to go get their Harvest Grain and Nut pancakes. They have sugar-free syrup, too, so it’s all good!!
Thanks for making me hungry, Beth. Now I want my mom to make me some oatmeal pancakes!
Caren, you were very lucky indeed to have such a wonderful mother! I stayed home with my kids but didn’t cook them breakfast. I didn’t get up early enough *g*
You’ve made me hungry for oatmeal pancakes so we’re even
I did make maple oatmeal scones two weekends ago. My family loves them though I don’t quite consider them true scones – they’re more of a cross between a scone and a muffin. But oh, so good!
Hello Beth,
I wish some places served breakfast all day.
1. Coffee
2. Waffles
3. Scrambled eggs
4. Wheat toast
5. Bacon
6. Donut, but I should really pick the fresh fruit.
7. Coffee cake
8.Cold cereal
9. Omelet
10. Greasy hash browns with onions and peppers.
I wish some places served breakfast all day.
Me, too, Jane! I’m always sad when we go out to lunch and I see we’ve missed the breakfast menu by a few minutes *g*
1. Juice – OJ every morning
2. French toast
3. Eggs – scrambled
4. Bagel
5. Ham
6. Fresh fruit
7. Muffin
8. Cereal – Neither
9. Quiche
10. Favorite Breakfast indulgence is Krispy Kreme donuts, yum.
Barbara, my kids would totally agree with your indulgence pick *g* Getting donuts is always an adventure here since everyone likes something different
I would say yes to just about all of the above. The only exception, coffee is mandatory.
Coffee is mandatory for us here as well, Christie! Even my kids are coffee drinkers *g*
Oh, fun. I love breakfast.
1. Juice
2. Love pancakes and French toast — can’t choose!
3. Scrambled
4. English muffin preferred, but go with wheat toast
5. turkey bacon
6. fresh fruit
7. coffee cake
8. don’t like cereal, but eat oatmeal a lot
9. omelet
10. French toast or biscuits with gravy
Trish, my daughters love turkey bacon and I’ll eat it as well though I rarely eat regular bacon. I much prefer it over Canadian bacon or ham *g*
I’ve always loved bacon, but since I started eating turkey bacon a few months ago I much prefer it to regular bacon.
Nancy has inspired me to post my mom’s recipe for Swedish Rye Bread to the Member’s Only section of the website. It makes the best toast ever!! It’s dense and chewy and just a tad sweet – so good! I’ll try and get it posted tomorrow
There was no point in my doing the list. I have the same thing every day. A cup of tea to start off, a bowl of muesli, juice to take my pills with & coffee to finish. It works for me & stops me looking for something sweet mid-morning.
Sounds as if you have a good thing going, Mary!
