The Fangover

It just wouldn’t be October without ghost, ghouls, and vampires. So today, let’s welcome Kathy Love and Erin McCarthy who are here to talk about a book they co-wrote, The Fangover.

Thanks, Christy and The Romance Bandits for having Erin and I here today.  We are really excited about the upcoming book we wrote together called THE FANGOVER, which is out on November 6th.

It’s  the story of a vampire band, The Impalers, who arise the evening  after attending the Irish wake of one of their band members  only to realize none of them remembers a thing that happened after the wake.  So now they have to figure out what the heck happened, because it certainly seems like it was a lot.  There is a priest passed out in their  bathtub.  They also somehow acquired a talking parrot with a slight drinking problem and an obsession with Barry White.  And it doesn’t end there, they also have a mortal woman, who has been newly made into a vampire–and no one has a clue who bit her or why.  Plus the new vampire seems to be married to one of them. Not to mention the only one of them that might know the truth about the previous night is circling the room, stuck in bat form.  Yep, these guys definitely have a mess to sort out.  A mess that takes them all over the French Quarter of New Orleans, trying to figure out just what happened.

Since this is a crazy, sexy and romantic romp through the French Quarter,  Erin and I thought we’d give you a little guided tour of some of the places, where our vampires go in search of answers.  These are actually some of our favorite places in the Quarter and definitely spots you would want to hit on a trip to the Big Easy.

LaFitte’s Blacksmith Shop–On the corner of Bourbon and St. Phillip.   The oldest bar in America.  Even though it’s dark and dingy, you can just feel the history.  What vampire wouldn’t love a place like this?  Somewhere almost as old as they are.  Although a couple of The Fangover characters run into a problem here.  Thanks to the talking parrot who can’t hold his liquor.

Famous Door–On Bourbon.  One of bars where Erin and I always go while in New Orleans.  They usually have a great band (our all-time favorite was Rockbox).  Great people, good dance floor.  Although again, our characters don’t quite get to enjoy their visit to Famous Door that way we do, because their arch-nemesis happens to work there.

Fahy’s Irish Pub–On the corner of Burgundy and Toulouse.  This is a cool little pub somewhat away from the craziness of Bourbon.  A great place to sit, relax and talk.  Our characters find out a lot when they come to this place.  Of course, they mainly find out things they’d rather not know.

Voodoo Authentica–On Dumaine. Want to see everything voodoo?  Gris gris bags, shrines to all the voodoo laos (voodoo saints), voodoo dolls and spells.  You can even have Zaar, a voodoo practitioner do a reading and “cast the bones” for you.  Our characters never actually go to this store, but Erin and I do every visit.  And you can bet there is voodoo in The Fangover.  Would it be a romp around New Orleans without it?

Krazy Korner–On the corner of Bourbon and St. Peter. This is another excellent place to see live bands.  And they have a very cool upstairs bar with one of those famous balconies overlooking Bourbon.  So if you go there, get some beads to throw.  As far as our story, well, the name sort of says it all.  The characters find out some krazy (crazy) stuff here.

And finally…

Napoleon House–On Chartres.  This restaurant isn’t actually in our story, because our vampires don’t eat…well, one of ours does, but in general restaurants are not their thing.  So I mention this place purely because it’s a favorite of mine and Erin’s.  This is always the first place we go to eat when we get to The Quarter.  It’s old and quirky and has the coolest courtyard so you can eat outside.  Their red beans and rice is to die for–there’s a vampire joke there somewhere, right?

So what are some of your favorite places?  In New Orleans or elsewhere?  What place do you have to go back to again and again because you love it so much?

Thanks for letting us share a few of our favorite places with you.  And we hope you will enjoy reading about them as The Impalers go on their wild goose chase, or rather their wild drunk parrot chase.

Also please join Erin and I for our seven day, FANGOVER contest from October 30-November 5 leading up to the release day on the 6th.  There will be fifteen chances to win awesome prizes.  Prizes like free books, vampire-hunting kits, gift cards and more.  Check our Facebook pages to find out all the details.

This books sounds like a lot of fun as I live in Australia I have not been to New Orleans but I have read about it in many stories and it is a place I would love to visit.

Here in Sydney I usually end up in the City about once a month with our romance reader group and we usually end up at The Lindt Cafe for desert and the food is amazing LOL if anyone ever visits Sydney find one of The Lindt Cafes you won’t be sorry.

    Have Fun

Kathy and Erin, this books sounds like an absolute hoot – and a little like the aftermath of a few parties I went to when I was a wild and crazy uni student. Oh, dear, I’m getting headache recollections – not good! Good luck with the Impalers’ story – love the band name!

    Hi Kathy and Erin(waving madly)

The Fangover (love that title!) sounds great. I’ve been to New Orleans several times but missed some of the places you’ve mentioned. I’ll put them on the list for next time. One of my favorite spots in NO is the Court of Two Sisters. It’s a tourist hangout, I know, but I love the Charm gates in the entrance hallway.

Kathy!!! Great to see you – it’s been way too long!! Welcome Erin!!

LOL this sounds like a great read. Will queue it up for a fun Halloween read.

We went to NO years ago, after a Romantic Times convention in Baton Rouge. I don’t remember many of the places we saw, but I enjoyed wandering the little side streets and finding cute little shops and museums.

Our favourite place is Charleston, SC. I dont’ know if it’s the history, the charm, the great restaurants, the lovely people or just that it has a little of everything we enjoy, but we return time and again.

Anna, I love Charleston. I haven’t been there in 17 years but I’m dying to get back.

Anna! How are you? I so miss you. Are going to Atlanta for RWA?

I love the little shops too. Erin and I found this great shop in St. Peters that made it’s own perfumes. They actually had an orginal scent called New Orleans. I have to say it smelled considerably better than the Frech Quarter really does. :)

Key West has to be my favorite place. It’s not necessarily the bars and partying, however it’s the atmosphere of people having fun and letting their hair down that is so infectious. One thing people never think about there is the history of the town. Ernest Hemingway’s home and his cats with the extra toes is fabulous. I’m sure it’s a must for every author to visit. Another favorite spot there is the lighthouse. The views are amazing. Let’s not forget Mel Fisher’s museum and the booty from the Atocia (sp.)

I’ve been to New Orleans and enjoyed touring some of the areas. I admit that on Bourbon Street, I gave into the taunts and waved my boobies at the people on the balcony! You should have seen the beads I got! My favorite one had a biker woman on it! What a hoot! I decided to do this as I am a breast cancer survivor and felt like I could show off those babies! ;-)

“Fangover” sounds adorable and I’ll bet it’s a super novel.

Connie, I love your reason for baring the girls. I did hang out on the balcony of Krazy Kats. It was fun and crazy because it was gay pride weekend.

    • 6.2

Connie, I would love to visit Key West someday. I hear it not only has that fun atmosphere but is a gorgeous place.

I love Key West too! The atmosphere is amazing there. And, yes, the people are so friendly. I like that about New Orleans too. You can just strike up a conversation with anyone.

I actually went to Key West with Erin. (We do occasionally do things seperately). We did the ghost tour which was cool. And I got some sort of spooky pictures at one of the graveyards.

It’s been over 40 yrs. since I’ve been in New Orleans bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb (my cat, Lily, says hi lol)

and one of the things I remember are the hurricane drinks but I don’t remember where I got it but that it was perfectly all right to walk the streets with a drink in hand lol.

    • 7.1

Catslady, the NO hurricanes really pack a punch, don’t they? One of them knocked a friend of mine off-kilter for half a day. You mentioned the go-cups, and that’s one of the things I find amazing about New Orleans since I come from a state with open container/public display of alcohol regulations.

    • 7.2

LOL, catslady, tell Lily we say Hi too.

Oh, those hurricane drinks are really good, aren’t they?

      Kathy Love says:

Those hurricane are dan–ger-ousss! And Pat O’Briens makes some really strong ones.

The go-cups are amazing, aren’t they? I have one at my house as souvenir. It says “BIg Ass Beer.” And they weren’t kidding I think the cup held 2 1/2 beers. No shortage of alcohol in the Big Easy!

Erin and Kathy, welcome and congratulations on your new release! That’s a great title, and the book sounds cool.

A lot of my favorite places are in Anna S.’s homeland, so I haven’t seen them in a long time. I love Middleham Castle in Yorkshire, the Lake District, and Westminster Abbey, the National Gallery and Portrait Gallery, and Foyle’s bookshop in London.

Here in the US, I love New York city, though I like living where the pace is a little slower. The dh and I enjoy Savannah. I like the NC mountains a lot. Nag’s Head, on the Outer Banks, is a family favorite vacation spot.

We’ve been to New Orleans but not explored enough for any place to be a favorite. It’s a beautiful old city, though. Some of the houses on St. Charles Avenue are amazing.

      Nancy,

I’m hoping to go to England next year. Anna and I have a mutual friend, author Julie Cohen, and I’m dying to go visit her.

I also want to go to Savannah. The architecture looks so gorgeous and I love going on ghost tours. I hear Savannah has one of the best.

    Congrats! :)

I went to New Orleans before but that was 15 yrs ago so I am sure that most of the stores and sites are different now.

I love NY City though. Always like Central Park.

    • 9.1

May, NYC is one of my favorite places. But I haven’t spent much time in Central Park. Next trip, I’m going there.

      Kathy Love says:

      Hi May!

I love NYC too. I’ve walked around Central Park a bit. I had to go to Strawberry Fields, because I’m a huge Beatles fan. I love going to NY at Christmas time. It’s so beautiful.

Nancy, I still haven’t been to Savannah. I’d love to go do there and explore. Some day….sigh

Hi, Erin and Kathy, welcome to the Lair. Your book sounds crazy wild! I love how you use sites you’ve actually visited and enjoyed in your story.

My go-to place to relax away from home is the Carmel Valley and the Monterey Coastline. It’s lovely and peaceful and restless all at the same time.

    • 11.1

Jo, I love Monterey. It’s rugged and beautiful.

    • 11.2
      Kathy Love says:

      Hi Jo,

I went to Carmel and Monterey, gosh probably 15 years ago now. It was so beautiful. I actually liked in Santa Barbara for two years…also beautiful. But I was a poor college kid, so I didn’t take advantage of as much sightseeing as would have liked.

The GR and a parrot with a drinking problem? The horror. The Horror!

This is one of the best premises for a book I have heard in a long time. I cannot WAIT to read this. Especially as it takes place in one of my very favorite cities in the whole world. When I was in grad school at USM New Orleans was only 90 minutes away and I spent a great deal of time in the Big Easy!

Voodoo Authentica is a great place to visit. Spent a good bit of time there. St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 is another great place to visit. And no trip to New Orleans is complete without a visit to Cafe du Monde – some beignets, a cup of chickory coffee and the Times Picayune and you can while away a morning watching the people go by. LOVE New Orleans!

::waving:: Hi everyone! Thanks for having us here… I’m away on a writer’s retreat but I wanted to pop in and say hi.

I love New York City as well, and I’m really looking forward to going to Savannah next year. That will be my first time there. I loved Charleston the one time I was there. I’m a sucker for old plantation homes. I love the history and well, duh, the romance of them. ;)

I’ve never been to New Orleans, but I would love to – but not in the summer with the high humidity.
I love to visit historic places, and unique shops – and then of course some great casual food – excellent place that I enjoy is Charlottesville Va.
