Spring is Springing

The Spring Equinox is almost upon us, which brings so many wonderful things to mind.  Babies and blooming flowers, little lambs bouncing over a field of new green grass, beginnings and oh, so many new possibilities.  I really don’t have a favorite time of the year, because I can always find something awesome about whatever month is on the calendar, but spring always seems to have that extra spark of something special. It could be because my youngest daughter was a spring baby or that I was married in the spring.

Or maybe it is all those flowers.  I love flowers year ’round, but seeing the bulbs pop up, grow and bloom always seems like a gentle chiming alarm, letting us know the earth is wakening and it’s time for a new growing season.  And, yeah, they are so pretty!

I think to a lot of people, spring means baseball.  I’m totally clueless about it, but I do appreciate that there are suddenly so many guys in tight pants around to check out!

Spring, this year, means another go at the vegetable garden for us. Last year we had a good crop of tomatoes, a couple of pumpkins and enough fingerling potatoes for one meal.  The rest was very, very skimpy.  This year, we’ve amended the soil and know how the light will hit through the season a lot better, so fingers crossed I actually get a loaf of zucchini bread and a salad out of it this year, too :-D

Spring’s all about fashion to me, too. After a winter of bundled up and layered (yes, even in sunny California.  I have thin blood *g*) I’m really looking forward to dresses and lighter fabrics.  Which, of course, leads to spring shoes.  Sandals, baby!!!!  I’m so ready for sandal season.

Don’t get me wrong, I do adore boots.  If I could only own one single type of footwear, I’d have to go with boots, actually.  But sandals…  Oh sandals.  The heights, the materials, the studs or ribbons or jewels.  Whew, getting excited here!

But even as much as I love fashion and shoes, my absolute favorite thing about spring is the beginning of pedicure season!!  Woot, happy toes, baby!  I love the pampered luxury of a salon pedicure, the fun of at-home pedicures and the wild design choices to play with. Single color, ombre, designs, flowers, jewels, so much to choose from.

And thanks to the sandals, cute toes are easier to show off.

So what about you?  What does spring mean to you?  What’s your favorite thing about this season?  And hey, are you a pedicure kind of gal?  If so, what’s your favorite style?

    Hey Tawny,
Spring means more daylight hours and digging out my capris and t-shirts. It’s so nice when they massage your feet before painting the nails. I don’t get pedicures that often.

YAY and congrats on nabbing the Rooster, Jane :-D I think he’s up for getting a pedicure today, if you wanted.

Ahhh, daylight!!! I love longer daylight hours too, Jane :-) Even though I’m an avowed night owl, night doesn’t start for me until around 10pm, so it’s great to have sunlight almost until then so I can get things done. And YES, the massages. Oh, yes, totally awesome.

Hey Jane! You nabbed the rooster! Get him to brush-paint your nails. He’s quite artistic, despite his rascally ways.

You are taunting me. I am on the precipice of cardigans and thermal underwear & you are talking about sandals & pedicures. For shame!!

      Tawny Weber says:

Ooops. *hanging head in shame* I’m sorry, Mary. I didn’t mean to taunt. Not really :-D

And if it helps, it’s pouring rain and storming here right now. So my cute pedicure is covered up with my thick, warm, cozy socks.

      Jeanne Adams says:

Ohh, Mary! I’d rather have cardigans and thermals, truth be told, but since Spring IS springing here in the states…

Hey Helen! I love Autumn too…in fact, as you all probably know by now, I’d rather it be Autumn and Winter. Grins.

I do love my flowers though and they’re springing up around here with all the unseasonably warm weather.

      Tawny Weber says:

Helen, I’m a right there with you (and Jeanne *g*) in loving autumn. Especially for that cuddling time :-)

I’m cool with people touching my toes, but I’ll admit, I hate it if they tickle me. A lot of the time, I’ll do my own pedis to avoid that.

Ahhh, green with envy, Tawny! I’m still wearing sandals here (at the moment I have gunmetal polish on my toes). All too soon, the horrible cold will set in. I wish I could have spring all year ’round. It’s my favourite season, although summer comes a close second because I love swimming and the beach. Good luck with the vege garden! There’s nothing like fresh tomatoes warmed by the sun, is there?

    • 4.1
      Jeanne Adams says:

Mmmmm. Tomatoes. One of the only reasons I tolerate summer even remotely well…sigh.

      I’d rather have cold. :>

My flowers, though, are loving our warmth, as I said to Helen!

      Tawny Weber says:

Mmmm, fresh tomatoes and cucumbers, salad right from the yard. I love gardens LOL But brrr on the cold weather coming your way. It’s rainy and icky here this week, complete with mud sliding down the hill in my backyard and causing a total mess

I’m going to sit here and imagine your beaches and warm weather, and totally envy you *g*

I had only had two pedicures and though I loved it I won’t be getting any more, I had to have a toenail permanently removed so the pedi people aren’t fond of me. I am still trying to figure out how to decorate that nailess toe……LOL

You need a cute toe ring, Dianna!

      Tawny Weber says:

Dianna, my MIL had both of her big toenails removed. The girls used to paint false ones on her skin for fancy occasions *g* nobody ever got close enough to her feet to realize it was a faux nail.

    Beth Andrews says:

Can’t wait to hear what goodies you get out of your garden this year, Tawny! My older daughter has started a compost pile – which is weird as she does not like gardening or working outdoors in any way *g*

It’s actually spring-like here – a rare occurrence in Mid-March as we usually still have snow this time of the year :-)

    • 6.1
      Tawny Weber says:

Oh wow, a compost pile, huh? Now that’s a cool idea. I would worry about the dogs and raccoons making a mess, but I’ve heard they are so fabulous for the soil that it might be worth it.

YAY on having spring weather :-) I tend to shiver when I hear what you see outside your window *ggg*

So what about you? What does spring mean to you? What’s your favorite thing about this season? And hey, are you a pedicure kind of gal? If so, what’s your favorite style?

Spring in the Southern Hemisphere is in the second half of our year; so that’ll be around the time of Autumn/Fall for you guys. And at that time of year, I’ll be celebrating my birthday.

However, now, it’s Autumn here. And this year, I’m planning my new garden. In the past I haven’t been able to but this year, I can. I’ll explain: you see, living in a unit complex, you can come across some really crazy people. And from the time I moved in, there’s been one crazy who has driven the rest of us nuts. She has caused a lot of people to move out due to her poking her nose into their business too much. Since late December, she has been gone; so we’re all organising our gardens and houses so they look good. This is why I’m spending my Autumn/Winter doing this because A) my garden is dormant during that time and perfect to redesign while it’s sleeping and B) the crazy neighbour isn’t around anymore.
Sounds mean but it’s a relief to be able to get in and make my house look like it’s nice and classy instead of something from the Simpson Desert.

Spring – for me – brings change-of-season colds and flus and then the joy of Halloween… great stuff. And then we have our Monsoon Season… and Christmas here. :)

How true that is… I’m looking forward to being able to get out and about to Bunnings and fixing up my front garden first, then continuing onto the back yard… it’ll look great! :)

I need to do spring cleaning and air-out my house maybe add some spring colors to my ward drobe.

      Jeanne Adams says:

Same here, Gail! :> Short sleeves….Hmmmm better work on my arms before it’s permanently short sleeve weather. Sigh.

    • 9.2
      Tawny Weber says:

Oooooh yeah! Spring cleaning is so great. That ‘throw open the windows and air it all out’ freshness is such a welcome change after winter. And the spring colors are fun this year. Very bright and sassy :-D

    Jeanne Adams says:

Hey Tawny! Fun post!! I have a love-hate relationship with Spring. Love, because I adore all my flowers – tulips, daffodils, hyacinth, forsythia, peonies – and my blooming trees! (Pear, peach, weeping cherry, Yoshino cherry!) And I love the Cherry Blossom Festival here in DC. If ya’ll have never come around for that, it shoudl go on your Bucket List. See the cherries bloom in DC. GOR-GEOUS!!!

The hate part is that Spring leads to Summer and unbearable Heat. Ugh.

I love getting to wear sandals though, and yes, on the pedi (though not often professional b/c they’re often not so careful!). I’m determined this year to try some of the cool designs on my toes. :> I loved that red one in the picture on the blog. Hmmm….

I adore those high-heeled sandals you showed too. Couldn’t wear them, but LOVE the look of them! :> The flats are gorgeous too. :>

      Tawny Weber says:

I love the blooming flowers and all the gorgeous colors and textures. But as you said, there is a definite downside, for us that’d be allergy season. Allergies, ick.

I hear you on the need to find a good manicurist for professional pedicures! A clean, professional environment and a skilled technician are a must. And that red design is definitely cool :)

As are, of course, those gorgeous sandals!!! I want.

  11. 11
    Jeanne Adams says:

Oh, and should have said that like Gail, it’s air-out-the-house adn Spring Clean season for me. Love to get those doors and windows open! Wheeeee! :>

  12. 12

I’ve always loved when things start to bloom and show life again each spring, even if it does bring on the allergies too. But you’re right about another great reason to look forward to warmer weather — cute shoes! :)

All the extra sunlight also gives me a nice mood boost, and I like being able to get outside after a winter of being cooped up, although this winter was much milder than most.

    • 12.1
      Tawny Weber says:

      Shoes AND sunlight!!!

Two very awesome reasons to love spring, Trish *g* Getting outside is a good one, too. Outside, in the sunshine, wearing cute shoes :-D

    Jo Robertson says:

Fun topic, Tawny! Spring isn’t looking too good today; it’s rainy, which means winter is hanging on for a while at least.

Spring always means Easter to me and Spring Break and anticipation of summer. I love pedicures and try for funky colors that I wouldn’t put on my fingernails, but which seem really spunky on my toes!

    • 13.1
      Tawny Weber says:

Jo, I’m right there with you in loving the funky shades for toes!!! I rarely polish my fingernails since the constant keyboard work tends to ruin manicures pretty fast. But toes? Those are all about the fun!

And yeah, as much as we need the rain, it’s kinda gloomy and blah here today, very not-spring-like :-P

  14. 14

Hi Tawny! I’m soooo ready for spring. Even though it was a mild winter, I’ve had enough of the gray skies. I’ll probably try the veggie garden again too. But like you I haven’t had much success. Apparently you have to water them and pull weeds and stuff? Ugh. :-) Looking forward to bare feet weather too! YAY!!!!! But mostly…I want to go swimming. I know it’s still a little soon. But it’s my favorite thing. Can’t wait!!

      Tawny Weber says:

ROFL Paige, yeah, I’ve heard rumor of that water and weeding thing. Hmm, I might have to factor that in this year and see what happens :-D

YAY on the bare feet weather!! As much as I love shoes, my feet do spend most of their time bare. The better to see the pedicure, of course.

I hope you get lots of great swimming weather this year!

    I luuuuurve pedicures.

I’ve been jonesing for one lately. But we’re saving money, so I’m stuck doing my own.

Bleh. My hands and feet are in serious need of professional help.

As good as we might be, there’s nothing quite like the massage they give at the salon. Ooooooh yeah, the tension release!!! Love it :-)

Aloha, Tawny! Spring means Spring Break – we are currently vacationing on the Big Island. Since this is our third trip, we are actually just relaxing!

Hawaiians wear “slippahs” year round … yet I don’t paint my toenails. I just go au natural.

    • 16.1
      Tawny Weber says:

Aloha Kim :-) I hope you have a fab Spring Break on the big island! And au natural and a lot of beach time are a great combo -the sand is rough on the polish *ggg*

    Annie West says:

Tawny, it’s autumn here in Australia, which is lovely. I long ago decided that my have seasons were the ‘change’ ones – spring and autumn – with that break from the cold or the heat of the other months. The garden comes alive and I feel much more energetic. I feel I have the energy to sort out every cupboard and cranny in the house and get everything in tip top shape – not that I ever manage to do that…! Enjoy your lovely spring.

      Tawny Weber says:

      Hi Annie :-D

Transitional seasons really are lovely, and so soothing. Although the craziness of spring cleaning tends to unsooth me a smidge *g* I hope you’re enjoying your autumn!!

  18. 18

Lovely post, Tawny! And I love the shoes. I can just see you wearing that awesome black pair. ;-)

I was so hoping it would rain today, but alas, the sun is shining — as it seems to do almost every day of the year in Southern CA. I’m not complaining though. I like warm weather, just not too warm. Living this close to the beach, I actually like it a little gloomy. It keep the crowds away. I’m selfish like that. :-)

I love your vegetable garden and I’m stealing that picture to show to my DH. Wonder if he’d be willing to build one of those for our yard? I promise I would tend it. Swear!

    Happy Spring/Autumn, everyone!

    • 18.1
      Tawny Weber says:

LOL Kate. If I was that close to the beach, I’d be there all the time. How hard is the sand on a laptop, I wonder? I suppose I’d wish for gloom, too, if it meant a little less crowds.

We’re raining like crazy up here, so you’re welcome to toodle on up the coast *g* That way I can show you the garden in person (it’s a big bunch of dirt right now) and help you convince your hubby that you need one of your very own!

I’ve always enjoyed Spring the most. I planned both my kids for spring – new beginnings and all that. So birthdays to celebrate and getting to go outside after cold and snow (although this year was darn good). I saw my first robin last week – miss hearing the birds and my flower are coming up. I like not having to bundle up in coats and boots etc. lol.

It’s very wet this week–maybe it’d be a good time to get a pedicure and cheer myself up, Tawny! I do like pedicures, but can still count on a hand the number of times I’ve had one :) They’re a fun special-occasion kind of treat! And I like sandals and more so, sandal-weather!

    • 20.1
      Tawny Weber says:

I keep telling myself we need the rain, but it has been a lot of wet gloom this week for sure, hasn’t it. I think a cheery pink on the toes would go a long way to brighten this though :-D I hope you find time to escape and treat yourself, Fedora!

Have to get my pedicure done for sure… I bought a new pair of dress shoes today, but no toes out… Still a little cool for me to wear sandels…
