Sniff, Sniff, Cough, Cough – Cold and Flu Quick Five

sick girl

You’ve probably guessed from the title of this post that I’ve been a tad under the weather. Yes, for the past week, I’ve been suffering with a nasty cold! Don’t worry, all modern computer screens have a special anti-cold filter in them, so I won’t be passing it on to you. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Why is it we forget how horrid colds are, until we get the next one? (we won’t even mention how terrible flu is!) Then we charge around like blue-bottomed flies trying to find all the cold meds in the house … panic when half of them are empty (who puts back empty medicine packs – not looking at anyone in particular?!) and the other half are out of date … dash out to the chemist to get refills, plus a year’s supply of tissues, then subside somewhere warm and suffer in silence (well, semi-silence!)! Or is that just me?

Cough syrup

It’s amazing that with all the wonders of modern technology, there still isn’t a cure for the cold. As I struggle to breathe and not cough, I want to smack the person who invented the phrase ‘relieve the symptoms’. That’s all well and good, but I want the symptoms gone – not to have to take yet more meds four hours later!

*Sigh* *Sniff* *Cough* Rant over! I know there are far worse things in life than a cold. Still, if I have to suffer … ๐Ÿ˜‰

Anyway, I thought I’d do a Quick Five on colds and flu to cheer up myself and any others under the weather. So:

1. Have you suffered from a cold/flu this winter (or summer for our southern hemisphere Banditas)?

2. What’s your worst symptom?

3. Are you a stoic (no meds) or a zapper (kill the cold with the biggest, baddest medicine) or somewhere in-between?

4. What’s your favourite non-medicinal cold remedy?

5. What is your favourite way to pamper yourself, when you have a cold?

Oh dear, Anna! So sorry to hear you’re under the weather–hope you’ll be feeling better fast!

I think we’ve mostly dodged any serious sniffles so far this season, but it ain’t over yet ๐Ÿ˜‰ I tend to find a cough to be the most aggravating symptom. I hate the congestion and the stuffed-up feeling, but the cough is the part that seems to linger on for weeks on end, sometimes sneaking up with a severe coughing fit unexpectedly in public, to the point where passersby stop to inquire if they need to call for assistance ๐Ÿ™ Not fun! I tend towards the stoic side, except for loads and loads of cough drops. And favorite non-medicinal remedy–hot drinks (mostly water, but sometimes apple cider ๐Ÿ˜‰ )

Yes, Fedora, I’m afraid we have plenty of cold and flu season left! I hate the cough part too; it seems like I can handle other symptoms, but the cough is hard to treat.

  • Jane says:

    Hello Anna,
    Feel better soon.
    1. Luckily I haven’t gotten sick this winter.
    2. Cough. It always takes forever for the coughing to cease.
    3. I’m definitely a zapper. When I’m sick, I need NyQuil to help me sleep.
    4. Just vitamin drops.
    5. Normally when I’m sick I don’t have the energy to pamper myself.

    Anna

I am sorry you are not well sending hugs ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Have you suffered from a cold/flu this winter (or summer for our southern hemisphere Banditas)?

Touch wood not so far I am sure it will come with winter

    2. Whatโ€™s your worst symptom?

Not being able to breathe properly and a runny nose oh and the coughing

    3. Are you a stoic (no meds) or a zapper (kill the cold with the biggest, baddest medicine) or somewhere in-between?

No meds just some panadol to help if I have a fever

    4. Whatโ€™s your favourite non-medicinal cold remedy?

Rest and read a book ๐Ÿ™‚ as long as my eyes aren’t watering too much

    5. What is your favourite way to pamper yourself, when you have a cold?

    Rest and read ๐Ÿ™‚

Hope you are feeling better soon

    Have Fun
    Helen

    • Jo Robertson says:

LOL, Helen, resting and reading is always a good cure. I hate a runny nose, too, because you have to wipe it but then it gets so tender and sore.

What’s panadol? Is that like tylenol or aspirin? Some kind of analgesic?

  • Mozette says:

    1. Have you suffered from a cold/flu this winter (or summer for our southern hemisphere Banditas)?

I rarely get sick anymore. Being 40, I’ve kinda figured out how this thing ticks and what goes on when people go out and spread it… once, I was on a bus when a dude got on and sprayed every last person on there with a huge coughing fit! He sounded like a huge dog! But I was the only one say what nobody else would: ‘Well, gee, thanks for giving us all the flu you… ‘ you can only guess what I called him. Within the week, I had Strep Throat and my folks had to take me to the doctors.

    2. Whatโ€™s your worst symptom?

Usually the fever to start with. But most of the time it’s the cough. If it goes to my chest, I’m totally screwed and must head off to the hospital where they stuff me full of fluids and crap until I’m better…. blech

    3. Are you a stoic (no meds) or a zapper (kill the cold with the biggest, baddest medicine) or somewhere in-between?

You know, most of the time, I’m pretty stoic… I can get through a cold by having boiling hot showers (to help steam out all that mucus) and then get myself through by using the good old-fashioned inhalings with the towel over my head… oh, yay, how much fun are they?

    4. Whatโ€™s your favourite non-medicinal cold remedy?

Sleep. Cranberry Juice. Garlic in everything (dinner meals mainly) and lots of water. Sleep. Fresh air… lots of fresh air.

    5. What is your favourite way to pamper yourself, when you have a cold?

Popcorn, tea and anything mushy on my dvd player… you know the movies I mean:

    Bed of Roses
    Step Mom
    While You Were Sleeping
The Lost Boys (yeah, a bit of Jason Patric is good). ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Jo Robertson says:

Don’t you just hate when people are sick and are inconsiderate, Mozette. I want to shout, why don’t you stay home? Or at the very least cover your mouth! Didn’t your mom teach you good manners?

      • Mozette says:

And you know, I’ve never had the flu shot… and have never had the flu! ๐Ÿ˜€

And yet, all my friends and family have had the flu shot and caught the flu…. sooo, what’s going on? Sure I’ll get a part of the flu, but not the flu, all because I won’t get the flu shot.

People are shocked when I refuse it, and yet when they’re down with the flu all year, and I’m not, they begin to wonder what the hell they’ve done to themselves with getting that shot. :/

  • Shannon says:

    1. Have you suffered from a cold/flu this winter (or summer for our southern hemisphere Banditas)?

I had a cold in the fall, but that particular bug has kept away from me.

    2. Whatโ€™s your worst symptom?

Dry nose after I was over the worst of the symptoms. (It was a really mild cold.)

    3. Are you a stoic (no meds) or a zapper (kill the cold with the biggest, baddest medicine) or somewhere in-between?

I believe the meds can do a lot, so I use them according to directions. But I stay away from those that contain alcohol or that cause mood spikes. One makes me manic; a couple of others can really depress me. (These came on the market in the 70s and there’s a whole bunch of better ones these days, so I don’t hear people reconmmending any of them anymore.) An old me that help me (and I can use since I’m single) is Vicks.

    4. Whatโ€™s your favourite non-medicinal cold remedy?

Sleep. Ice cram for a sore throat. Daytime TV also is a cure; pretty soon I want to be better. If I can get it, Thai Chicken Soup, the hot version I swear clears the sinuses and kills lots of the virus.

    5. What is your favourite way to pamper yourself, when you have a cold?

Same as whatever sickness I’ve had. Curling up under the electric blanket with a favorite beverage on the night stand.

Get well soon. A doctor looked at me and once and said, Colds last 7-10 days, anything longer and you have complications. Get your butt back here then.

I hope you are feeling better, Anna. This has been a bad winter for me, like two winters ago….I have been sick every other month since September! I do not get over “colds”, so usually get to the doctor and hope for meds. I had to fight with him last time (3 weeks ago) about giving me something. I have no spleen, so that makes my immune system even more weak.

Today, even, I have a stiff neck, like my glands are swollen. My throat hurt Friday night.Sore throat and swollen glands are my worst symptoms.

Been trying to pop extra vit. C, but don’t think it’s helping.

Non-medical remedy…NASTY Nyquil. I don’t think it helps, but DH does.

I pamper myself with a cup of hot tea or a bowl of mashed potatoes. That’s my comfort food. Sometimes even a bowl of Cream of Wheat sounds good on days I feel yucky.

    Feel better soon!

    My comfort

    1. I had one bad cold this year and it would be great if it’s the only!
    2. Ever since I had bronchitis over 20 yrs. ago, all my colds go to my chest. It’s bad enough when I can’t breathe, but the coughing is the worst I think.
I will take ibuprofen and I do use nose drops and antihisimines but I stay away from the other medicines if I can – they may help me sleep but they make me feel 10 times worse in the morning. It’s like my body held everything in and it has to come out the hard way lol.
    4. Tea with honey helps a sore throat.
    5. I read if possible and if I can’t read that means I am deathly sick and I don’t leave my bed lol.

Sure hope you feel better soon and something mentioned in these posts helps a little bit!

had a horrid cold after Christmas that settled mainly in my throat though had plenty of coughing too. my throat went from maybe a little sore to on fire & raw overnight, had little to no voice, and zapped of energy (but couldn’t sleep well because of the sore throat & coughing). needless to say I was quite happy after a couple days that my fever broke & I could again swallow without the pain making my eyes tear. the cold still lingered for a couple weeks till the cough finally stopped completely. was one of the worst I’d had in a long while. as for treating it, I’m somewhere in between preferring to ease the systems & slowly getting impatient with it as it goes. I swear by good (preferably home made) chicken soup in combatting a cold — it seems to help better than anything. along with rest & curling up with a good book of course.

    hope you feel better soon.

    • Jo Robertson says:

I’m with you on the good old homemade chicken soup, Gamistress! My mother always made that for us when we were sick.

When I was in my thirties I got a strep throat infection every year. Was very miserable and of course you need antibiotics for that.

  • Jo Robertson says:

Such a timely post, Anna. Thanks for sharing your misery (giggle). I just had a stomach flu where I lost 5 pounds in one day! Pretty awful but short lasting. I always get a flu shot so rarely get the flu.

I guess there’s a reason we call a cold the “common” cold!

  • Anna, I’m sorry you’ve been sick! I hope the cold fades out soon.

Yes, as you know but others don’t, I have been sick–while I was visiting you. It was so ironic to me that one of our first stops in the ancient city of York was the very modern Boots chemist shop. It’s so good that you were with me because the only medication I recognized was Sudafed, which has never worked well for me.

My worst symptom is usually sinus congestion. Ugh.

I go for symptom relief–Advil Cold and Sinus at night, though if I take it during the day, the pseudoephedrine builds up in my system and then I’m too wired to sleep. Whatever that stuff was you told me to buy for during the day, plus nasal spray and a sleep aid for at night, worked well.

For comfort, I have hot tea. To pamper myself, I read and take naps.

  • Amy says:

After the month I just went through I had to post here. As EVERYONE here knows, many times over, I have been sick the entire month of Jan, and Feb, while looking up, still isn’t great.
When I am sick, LEAVE ME ALONE! Unless I feebally call your name and ask you to bring me something. God forbid we not have the ONE THING I NEED RIGHT NOW! No there is no asking, you go and get it ASAP.The End.
Do NOT try telling me this works or that works for YOU, it will not work for me. We’ve been married almost 30 years now, you know better.
Do not buy me any tissues except PUFFS, I will not use them, but I WILL use every piece of toilet paper in this house because I KNOW it is Charmin. And it is soft.
I will use Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE) at the very beginning of a cold/the flu. If it doesn’t it kill it ASAP I know I’m in for the long haul.
Most importantly, do not talk to me!
