Quick Five – Pancakes!

Posted by Anna Sugden Feb 22 2012, 12:51 am
Belated Happy Pancake Day to you all!
For those who don’t know what I’m talking about, yesterday was Shrove Tuesday – also known as Pancake Day (at least it is over here in England!).
The reason for having pancakes on Shrove Tuesday was to get rid of foodstuffs like eggs, butter and sugar before the Lent fasting, or the eating of plain food and no treats, began on Ash Wednesday.

Traditionally, the pancakes we have are sweet – they are thin and are eaten with sugar and a squeeze of lemon. Some people also have golden syrup or honey or jam.
Here is a recipe from British ‘how to cook’ guru, Delia Smith, on how to make pancakes.
There are many places around the country that still have pancake races or pancake tosses to celebrate the day, where contestants toss pancakes in a frying pan as they run! Even Westminster gets involved, with three teams representing the houses of
Parliament (the Commons and the Lords) and the media. All participants are expected to ‘observe gentlemanly and gentlewomanly behaviour’ at all times, including rules such as ‘Frying pans must not be used as weapons or as a means of making unseemly gestures, whatever the depth of provocation or the nature of the party at the root of the provocation’ and ‘Any surplus eggs, flour or batter must not be propelled in the direction of other participants or spectators’!
Politicians and the press misbehaving – surely not! (Thanks to Time Out for that tidbit *g*)
So, in honour of Pancake Day, here is a Quick Five:
1. Do you celebrate Pancake Day where you are? Do you have another way of celebrating Shrove Tuesday?
2. Stack or singles?
3. Savoury or sweet pancakes?
4. Thick or thin pancakes?
5. Favourite pancake and sides?
Do you have any fun pancake stories to share?
Comments
Is he coming to my place
Have Fun
Helen
Get him to make you pancakes, Helen!
Hey, Helen! He’s back at your place!!
Anna
Yes we have Shrove Tuesday here in Oz as well and when we were kids Mum always made pancakes on this day and we had them single (or though quite a few singles LOL) with lemon juice and sugar and sometimes with golden syrup yummo I love them but didn’t make any last night
.
1. Do you celebrate Pancake Day where you are? Do you have another way of celebrating Shrove Tuesday?
Yes we do
2. Stack or singles?
Singles usually but lots of singles LOL
3. Savoury or sweet pancakes?
Sweet pancakes
4. Thick or thin pancakes?
If I make them thin but if I buy them while out thick
5. Favourite pancake and sides?
I love Banana pancakes with wipped butter and maple syrup but also love them with lemon and sugar
Do you have any fun pancake stories to share?
Mum used to try and flip them and have us all laughing when we were young.
They had a big day in the City on Tuesday trying get in the Guiness Book of records trying to flip 90 pancakes to beat the record but alas I never heard if the did or not LOL
Have Fun
Helen
Oooh banana pancakes with maple syrup sounds yummy! I’m with you on lots and lots of singles, Helen.
I wonder if they broke the record?!
Cool about the record! We’ll have to look up and see if they broke it!
And banana….yum!
Mmm… pancakes, Anna!
Hmm… we don’t celebrate Shrove Tuesday, but I’m inspired–we’re having pancakes for breakfast Wednesday
I prefer singles myself, but do also admire the look of a neat stack of them…
I like my pancakes sweet, with sweet accompaniments–ice cream, fruit, whipped cream… Unless they’re latkes, in which case, savory is perfectly delicious, too!
I tend towards thinner pancakes, but a thick, fluffy one can be yummy, too!
I just got a set of those Star Wars pancake molds to try–will have to see whether the kids will get to eat the Millenium Falcon, X-Wing fighters, and Tie fighters… the first time I tried them, I failed to properly grease them, and the pancakes stuck fast. Alas!
Congrats on the GR, Helen–maybe he’ll make you pancakes! ;p
Do tell, Fedora – what did you have? Glad I inspired you *g*
OMG Star Wars pancake molds sound awesome – must get some!
They’re even on sale
Oooh, Fedora! Where did you get Star Wars pancake molds? :> I have the House of Star Wars here too. We have a Stormtrooper pancake flipper, so why not molds? Grins.
Hey Anna,
I didn’t even know about Pancake Day, but I’m sure some people were celebrating it on Tuesday.
2. Stack
3. Savory
4. Thick
5. Buttermilk pancakes with maple syrup.
I’m glad at least one person learned something today, Jane! Of course, you live in the city where they make some of the most awesome pancakes!
Nice to see both our hockey teams doing well!
*raises hand* I’ll confess to learning something too. Never heard of Pancake Day, but hey, I’m always up for pancakes (or a party!)
Me, too, Anna. I hope it lasts.
Anna, I love your post. Is it too sad of me to say it’s impossible to answer this as I believe there’s an occasion for every sort of pancake? One of my aims is to work my way through them all (the pancakes, not the occasions).
How is Sven at tossing pancakes?
LOL Annie – I think that’s a perfect answer! I’m prepared to do some research to test out your hypothesis!
Sven isn’t too bad, but it turns out that Paolo is an expert pancake flipper! The hockey hunks, naturally, are all very good with their sticks, but less good with the frying pans!
Heehee. I’m there with you Annie. I adore pancakes for virtually any occasion. :>
And WTG Paolo! I’m glad he stepped out of Sven’s shadow and showed his stuff!
1. We do celebrate, but for me it’s more a reminder that I have not had pancakes for a while & so I get busy.
2. Singles, but more than one single.
3. Just with lemon juice & raw sugar.
4. Thin thank you
5. Just your basic pancake.
It was a reminder to us too, Mary. My lovely hubby said last night that he didn’t know why we only ever had them on Pancake Day, when it’s such an easy meal.
Hi Anna -
I’m afraid traveling has totally knocked me off the calendar. I was surprised to hear that Mardi Gras was upon us. I’m so out of it.
While it’s my life mission to celebrate every possible food related holiday – we missed this one.
But then pancakes are not my favorite food – unless they’re served as a calorie laden dessert. For traditional pancakes, I prefer a single because I can’t eat more than that, with butter and syrup.. As long as I’m not making them, they can be thick or thin
I’m not picky.
However, I’d rather have a waffle. Is there a waffle Wednesday?
Welcome back, Donna!
For you, I’m sure there can be a Waffle Wednesday. I’ll get Paolo onto it right away *g*.
Donna said: “Its my mission in life to celebrate every food-related holiday”
Hahahahah! I’m so there with you on that one, Donna! In fact, I didn’t get enough Thanksgiving and Christmas turkey, so I made Thanksgiving for Mardi Gras on Sunday night for a houseful. Grins.
Food-related holidays. Love that.!
Can I place a vote for the waffle Wednesday? I am not big on pancakes either. If I ate them I would most likely lean toward the savory.
The only way I have ever had them is thick with butter and syrup.
Certainly, Dianna – put your orders in and Paolo will heat up the waffle iron!
1. Do you celebrate Pancake Day where you are? Do you have another way of celebrating Shrove Tuesday?
I’ve heard of Shrove Tuesday; but never knew what it meant until now.
2. Stack or singles? Short stack – that’s two pancakes – please.
3. Savoury or sweet pancakes? Sweet.
4. Thick or thin pancakes? Either will do, so long they’re nice and hot!
5. Favourite pancake and sides? Sometimes I like ‘em plain with plenty of cinnamin sugar on top and lemon juice… other times I love them with blue berries and cranberries cooked into them with cream or whipped butter and maple syrup.
Do you have any fun pancake stories to share? Not really… but there’s a place here in Australia called ‘The Pancake Manor’ (it might only be here in Brisbane I’m not sure). The first one opened on Charlotte Street in a Heritage Listed Church and I’ve loved going there for my pancakes each time I head into town… why? Well, next door is a massive bookstore called ‘Archives Books’ which is haunted… very interesting place that! It used to be a printer’s store back in early 1920′s owned by John Miller; however, that is another story for another time.
‘The Pancake Manor’ franchise has built into a popular place for people to hang out and eat. They recently opened a branch at Garden City – a perfect place to hit late at night when you’ve just gotten out of the movies or finished your shopping.
And they don’t just do pancakes; they also do waffles and other meals too… and great coffee!
The Pancake Manor sounds fabulous, Mozette – will have to get Anna C to take us there when we next visit.
We always like a trip to the iHop when we’re in the US – they do make great pancakes!
Great pancakes, yes, but their coffee could float bullets and not in a good way…
Weeellll, I don’t drink the coffee at the city branch; only ice coffee and latte. And they don’t taste too bad.
If I want good coffee – in any way, shape or form – I always track down a Gloria Jeans… it’s as close to my brother’s coffee as possible. And they sell great coffee beans too.
Oh, both the Pancake Manor and the bookstore sound delicious! :>
Hi Anna,
thinking about our disccusion, lol
1. Do you celebrate Pancake Day where you are? Do you have another way of celebrating
Shrove Tuesday?
we dont celebrate pancake day and shrove tuesday? what was that?
2. Stack or singles? ehm…singles
3. Savoury or sweet pancakes? depend but mostly sweet. i dont know if america/australia or england have a durian pancake, so yummy
4. Thick or thin pancakes? thin pancakces
5. Favourite pancake and sides? durian pancake
Hi Eli!
I just replied to you *g*!
Oooh yummy – just looked up durian pancakes and will have to get my lovely hubby to give those a go next time we feel like pancakes!
Well, I’ve learned TWO new things today! Eli, I had no idea what Durian pancakes were, but checked them out online. They look like blintzes (also fabulous!) and look extremely yummy. :>
Grins.
1. Do you celebrate Pancake Day where you are? Do you have another way of celebrating Shrove Tuesday? No, but we could always start!!
2. Stack or singles? I like one big pancake, that way the butter and syrup cover every inch. And I usually only eat one.
3. Savoury or sweet pancakes? So, are we talking potato pancakes? How about sweet potato pancakes? In that case, I can eat several!!
4. Thick or thin pancakes? Thick…coz, uhm, like I only eat one.
5. Favourite pancake and sides? I’m a traditional girl. I prefer one large buckwheat pancake with butter and maple syrup. And about five pieces of bacon on the side.
So, pancake story, huh? When my kids were little I used to make them a “teddy bear” pancake. He had a big pancake body, four small paws, a head and two ears. I used chocolate chips or raisins for the eyes, nose, mouth and belly button. A littel time consuming, but I only had to make 3 , plus one regular pancake for me. They loved it!
Ah, Suz that brings back memories! My Daddy could burn water, but for some reason he could make pancakes. And he would do Teddy Bear pancakes.
Mama liked to do Silver Dollar pancakes – smaller and easier for small hands to handle the fork when cutting them. :>
But we allllll liked pancakes!
You know, writing this, I realized I haven’t made teddy bear pancakes for the grandkids….YET.
I think that will be for the next morning they come to Grandma Suzie’s!
Awww – teddy bear pancakes sound lovely, Suz. My hubby has made me heart-shaped pancakes before.
Anna, what a fun post!
I love pancakes, but didn’t know Shrove Tues. was also Pancake Day. I do now, so it’ll be pancake day ’round here when Shrove Tues rollllllls around again.
As to stack or singles, I like it both ways. And doesn’t that sound kinky? Hahaha! One single big one, thick and fluffy, or several smaller fluffy ones, or a stack of thin Swedish pancakes….Silver Dollar, regular, buckhweat, whole wheat, Bisquick…you name it, I’ll eat it.
I like both savory and sweet – potato pancakes are fab, both sweet potato and regular, latkes, mushroom and cheese pancakes (more crepe-like), and any kind of sweet one you can cook up!
I like them both thick and thin, but I have a real fondness for the thin Swedish pancakes, and crepe-like pancakes. :>
Fav sides? Strawberries and whipped cream. Cinnamon apples and whipped cream. I like chocolate chips IN the pancakes, but only sometimes. Pecans. Yum.
Like Suz said, there needs to be bacon involved. Coffee. OJ. Ohhhhh yeah.
Glad to have encouraged a new tradition in the Adams household, Jeanne!
I must admit, I love them thick or thin, savoury or sweet *g*. Last night we had them for dinner – thin, with maple syrup and a side of English sausages – yummy!
Oh, yum! Pancakes! I love pancakes. I have a sister who loves them so much she uses them as motivation when she jogs. As in, “if I can just jog back to the house I can have pancakes!”
I missed our pancake supper at church last night–my oldest had science fair–so I think I’m going to make pancakes for supper tonight. We love breakfast for dinner in this house.
We love breakfast for dinner here too, Susan *g*. I love how your sister thinks – then again, if she has your svelte build, she can afford to think like that!
Pancakes, yum. Here’s a recipe for Finnish ones:
Pancakes
Ohukaiset, letut, lätyt (it has many names in Finland)
•1/2 l milk
•2 dl flour
•2 eggs
•c. 1/2 tsp salt
1. Mix the flour and the milk. Add the salt and beat in the eggs. Let the batter stand for a while before frying.
2. Fry pancakes on a hot pan, greased with butter or margarine.
3. Serve with sweet jam.
This would be called “pannukakku”, pancake
To make a sheet pancake from the same batter, pour into a greased baking pan or frying pan and bake in the oven at 225° C until golden brown.
Abbreviations:
dl =decilitre
l =litre
tsp = teaspoon
Weights and measures:
1 kilogram = 1000 g = 2 lbs 3 oz
100 g = 3.5 oz
1 litre = 10 dl = (more than) 2 pints
1 decilitre = (less than) ½ cup
We recently had Runeberg’s Day, so check out Runeberg’s muffins.
Check out what Suzanne McMinn is doing now! If you want, you can help her with her new project.
Thanks for sharing the recipe for Finnish pancakes, Minna! Very similar to ours.
Mmmmm….pancakes!
1. Do you celebrate Pancake Day where you are? Do you have another way of celebrating Shrove Tuesday?
I didn’t know there was a Pancake Day. I love pancakes any day!
2. Stack or singles?
Either way. Usually I have a stack of at least two though.
3. Savoury or sweet pancakes?
Both!
4. Thick or thin pancakes?
I prefer thick. (Um…does that sound kinky to anybody else?)
5. Favourite pancake and sides?
After picking blueberries at a local farm the first thing I make is a batch of fresh blueberry pancakes. They’re served with melted butter, (real) maple syrup and crispy bacon. Obviously, this is not a breakfast I eat every day but it’s a special treat I savor!
LOL PJ – I’ll let Paolo know you like ‘em thick!
I love American bacon with my pancakes – don’t know why it’s so much nicer, but it is. Hmm will have to put some of our garden produce into pancakes – we have lots of raspberries, strawberries, blackberries and gooseberries in the freezer just waiting!
1. Do you celebrate Pancake Day where you are? Do you have another way of celebrating Shrove Tuesday? No, I don’t celebrate Pancake Day and hadn’t even heard about it until the other day when a FB friend form OZ mentioned it.
2. Stack or singles? Short stacks
3. Savoury or sweet pancakes? Hmmmm, both.
4. Thick or thin pancakes? Thick, unless they are crepe-like pancakes.
5. Favourite pancake and sides? Sounds strange, but corn pancakes. Love lots and lots of butter and syrup, preferably boysenberry or blackberry syrup.
6. Pancake story to share:
When I was a girl, my grandma would have pancake suppers on a Sunday night, once a month. We had everything: corn, potato, (yep, corn or potatoes thrown right into the batter), blueberry, backberry, plain….Believe it or not, the corn pancakes are really quite good.
I like pancakes, but just can’t seem to make them; I can’t flip them right or the batter is too runny or too thick. Now waffles—I use my mother’s recipe and the are yummy!
Oooh I love the sound of corn pancakes, Deb! Another variety to add to my list.
We always laugh at how difficult it is to make pancakes that flip easily and don’t break apart. We normally make a whole batch and the last one always comes out perfectly. We don’t complain, though, because they taste the same however imperfect they are! LOL
We usually have pancakes on sunday morning. I love blueberry pancakes with just a little butter and my favorite side is bacon:)
That sounds like a perfect Sunday treat, Gail!
I’ve never even heard of this Pancake Day, but it sounds tasty. I love pancakes, mainly just plain ol’ buttermilk pancakes with hot maple syrup and butter and a side of bacon. (Shh, don’t tell everyone at Healthy Writer.) I don’t have them very often, but love them when I do.
Just need to make sure we have some healthiness to go with those pancakes, Trish
Maybe some fruit and a brisk walk!
Fun post, Anna! Actually pancake day hasn’t ever been anything my family really noted – but I’m always happy to eat pancakes!
1. Do you celebrate Pancake Day where you are? Do you have another way of celebrating Shrove Tuesday? When I lived in Sydney, the biggest event was the gay and lesbian mardi gras.
2. Stack or singles? Stacks!
3. Savoury or sweet pancakes? Sweet.
4. Thick or thin pancakes? Thick.
5. Favourite pancake and sides? I like butter and maple syrup. Yum!
Well, next year , you’ll have to come over and experience lovely hubby’s spiffy pancakes, Anna!
Ooh, that sounds like a date!
I love pancakes, Anna! Though I’ve never heard of Pancake Day *g*
1. We call it Fat Tuesday but we don’t really celebrate it though my brother-in-law had an All You Can Eat Chocolate Buffet yesterday for those who do
2. Single. I may eat more than one but I eat ‘em one at a time
3. Both! Though not at the same time.
4. Again, I like them both.
5. Favorite pancakes so far were the ones we had in Nashville at The Pancake Pantry. Sooo good! Love warm maple syrup (no butter) and fresh fruit *g*
I didn’t know it was called Fat Tuesday, Beth – so I’ve learned something too!
Can’t wait for conference to be in Nashville, so we can go to the Pancake Pantry for a treat *g*.
Next Tuesday our local IHOP (International House of Pancakes) is having a free pancake day…they would like donations to the local Children’s Hospital in lieu of paying for pancakes. I love pancakes…grew up on them….well, what kid didn’t?
What a great idea, JackieW! That’s such a fab way to raise money for charity and get great pancakes too.
I just remembered! ‘The Pancake Manor’ has put out their recipe into containers at Coles supermarkets. I might pick one up next time I go shopping…. sounds like I’ll be having pancakes next week… oh, and I’ll have to get Maple Syrup as well (we have the Canadian organic type here too… yummo!).
Have one for me, Mozette!
Good on you, Helen! I think the GR can eat his weight in pancakes!
1. We did celebrate Pancake Day when we lived in England. Our neighbors introduced us to it and we took to it like ducks to water. Everyone in my family LOVES pancakes!
2. Stack ‘em up! I love a big stack of pancakes!
3. Savory or sweet, I just like pancakes!
4. Definitely thick pancakes!
5. Sides? Gobs of butter and maple syrup. However we do have a local cane syrup that has a divine rich dark taste.
We always had pancakes for breakfast on Easter Sunday after the sunrise service. My Dad was a great pancake flipper and he always did breakfast on Easter Sunday so Mom could have a break. I miss Dad’s pancakes. And here in the South we often have breakfast for supper – pancakes, bacon, sausage, eggs and grits.
We really got into grits when we were in the US, Louisa. We always bring a pack back whenever we’re back visiting. Shrimp and grits is one of my absolute fave meals.
What a fascinating post, Anna! I’ve nevver heard of Pancake Day, but I do love pancakes. Your description and the look of them sound more like crepes to me.
Pumpkin pancakes are one of my favorite (for special occasions); otherwise I love just plain old, slightly thick pancakes with butter and maple syrup. Yum!
I’m sure they’re very similar, Jo – I think crepes have a thinner consistency, even than our pancakes.
Yummo on the pumpkin pancakes!
1. Nope and nope. But an excuse to eat pancakes sounds fine by me!
2. Several singles.
3. Preferably sweet.
4. Both! But around here, we call the thin ones crêpes.
5. Thick – buttermilk pancakes with a pat of butter and real maple syrup . Thin – topped with banana and/or berries, whipped cream or vanilla ice cream and chocolate syrup when eating out…a dash of granulated sugar, rolled up and eaten with fingers if I make them at home
LOL we love eating the pancakes with out fingers at home too, Pissenlit. Often just as they come out of the pan and while the next one is cooking!
1. No and I kept telling Honey that the idea of pancakes kept calling my name yesterday!
2. Stack
3. Sweet
4. Thick
5. Buttermilk with berries and whipped cream!!
Pat C.
Ah my disorganisedly organised twin, that’s because our brains were in sync!
Hope you gave into the message and made Honey some pancakes.
I am not a real pancake lover, but I do love French toast. so that is what I had on Pancake Tuesday..
Well, if we can have Waffle Wednesday, perhaps we can have French Toast Friday, Kathleen!
