Pick Yer’ Poison…

There’s an incredibly cool gift shop in one of my favorite shopping centers here in DC. They feature stationary so exquisite the Queen probably wouldn’t be unhappy to get it as a gift. They have Slinkies and Silly Putty too. Magnets, and posters, journals and handmade wrapping papers line one of the walls.

Bookends -ohhh, do they have bookends! Totally awesome bookends!  Y’know those are terrifically hard to find now…well, cool ones anyway. Grins.

They have books too, but mostly coffee table books, hostess gift books and “useful” books – like Gardens of the World, An Atlas of Palaces and Castles, and Parties 101 . (Like we need THAT around here!)

Some of their journals are just gorgeous with their watercolor covers, or leather bindings with gilt stamping, or embossed dragons or fairies. Really great stuff.  They’re just astonishingly lovely, some of them.

Of course for me, the journals are just there to admire and appreciate that delectable workmanship.  Do ya’ll love these?  Do you use them or just keep them and appreciate the leatherworker’s artistry?  Grins.

I DO journal, but I have to have a big one – 10 by 13 or so – that’s really a hard-cover sketch book.

You see I don’t like lines in my journals. And I like to draw in them, doodle, sketch and play. So no lines, and none of these dainty, small (albeit gorgeous) journals.

This shop also features mugs, goblets, hand blown martini glasses, high-ball sets, and barware.

So I got to thinking when I was reading both Cassondra’s blog on Coffee Mugs and reading through Nancy’s blog yesterday about all the great books people were recommending, reading and writing – an quoting! – that maybe we need a goof-off, play day in the Lair.

A fun, crafty day.  Whaddya think?

I drafted the guys to help and we set up some tables in the main hall (well-covered with paper for protection) and put together a place where we can make some stuff. I think it would be totally fun to make some cool personalized mugs and wine glasses.

I’ve done this sort of cool glass and ceramic painting with girlfriends, and with my kids.  It’s really fun.  And yes, I talked it over with Sven too, so don’t think I’m going rogue here. We’ve got plain mugs and painting supplies (the kind you can put in the oven to cure quickly), and some wineglasses and paint for those too, which also cures quickly enough for them to be used within an hour or so of creation. :>

(Hey, it’s the Lair, we can do that here!)

In amongst the discussion about whether coffee or tea or hot chocolate was the best beverage, a lot of folks on Wednesday talked about what sayings or pictures they had on their current mugs.

Some they liked, some they didn’t, but they still liked the mug itself.

Soooo, I poked at Sven until he found us a vendor for these FABULOUS mugs. They’re just right in the hand, not too big, not too little. Perfect for coffee, tea or hot chocolate.  They’ve got bigger handles than those ones on the left there – bigger bowls too, but not TOOO big!  They’re PERFECT!!

If cold caffeine or juice is your “poison” to start your day or while you’re earnestly working, there are some glasses too!

Then there are the wine glasses. I actually got the inspiration for this little painting party from this great wineglass that was gifted to me and it had sculptural elements (kinda like the Bride one, down below!) and rhinestonse and feathers on the base.

It’s totally uptown! It’s from www.LolitaGlasses.com which you can buy directly from them, or at Amazon or B&N and a lot of the Hallmark stores too.  (Wish I got a kickback from that!  Ha!)

So there’s also packages of doodads and feathers and scrapbooking stuff too, if you want to REALLY embellish.

Here’s Sven with some aprons for all of us.

Oooh, Sven, thank you for also putting snacks out! Those crudite are gorgeous!!

And the cheese platters….ohhhhh….brie. You know how I love the brie. And stuffed mushrooms! Oh, Sven, you’ve outdone yourself!!! You’re a darling, as always.  *pressing a kiss to his cheek, which makes him blush like mad*

Okay! *clapping for attention* Ladies, gents, find a seat, grab a mug, glass or wineglass, and let’s get to it!

What’s your favorite scene or saying for the mug/glass/wineglass?

(Yes, you can make one of each type, a set of mugs, etc. We have plenty! Sven always over-buys!)

What character – hero, heroine, were-beast would you put on your morning coffee/tea mug, if you could find one? Dressed or undressed? Bwahahahah!

What hero would make a good photo for your mug?

Got a great line or quote you’d like to put on your morning juice glass?

(“Never give up, Never give up, Never give up!” “Bombs, away!” “Who moved my cheese?” “Just keep Swimming!”)

Now, the wine glass. Do you want one for red wine or white wine, champagne or all three?

Excellent! Now, what do you want to paint on it?

Mermaid and a quote from PC Cast’s or Virginia Kantra’s sea-based books?

A vampire bat on the base and two fangs at the lip of the red-wine glass for some of the fabulous, favorite Vamp books on your Keeper shelf?

Or Maybe just a title…One Book in the Grave. Sex, Lies and Mistletoe. Every Night I’m Yours.

Deadly Little Secrets… You knew I’d add that one, right?

We also have some beer mugs if you’re partial to that, and some glass pilsners, so have at it!!  Maybe a little basketball art to celebrate MARCH MADNESS!!!  Did ya’ll see that Georgetown game?  OMGosh.  Double overtime.  (Too bad they lost.  Sigh.)

Once we’re done, we’re going to break out the really great coffee, tea, beer, wines and whiskeys and some kickin’ hors d’ovres and have ourselves a little “taste” of our favorite “poison” using our wonderful new beverage services!   Yippeeee!!

Pick your glass, pick your poison. Sven’s making a list for a run to the various coffee, tea, beer and wine outlets as we get a good list going. We’re pretty well stocked around here, but you know, there’s a LOT of you, so…yes, a list!

What favorite beverages should we have on hand to fill your fun new glass/mug with?

Go ahead! Paint! Put the pictures on, get those quotes going!

Go!

*Sven hurries to Jeanne as she sits down to paint and whispers something hurriedly in her ear.  The missing  key to the exclusive pantry was with the gladiators – they’d found it near the Golden Rooster’s perch  - but now it’s missing again!  Eeek!  Does that mean no more brie!?!  He’s going to get Marcus and Bran to break through the door if they can’t find that key soon….*

Jeanne, Jeanne, Jeanne! I’m sorry, we are no longer friends. I’ve been to visit you TWICE!!! And you’ve never taken me to this shop? In spite of the fact that you know I’m a stationery tart from way back. I’m sorry, I just can’t look at you anymore. I’m hurt, I tell you, hurt. Actually my eyes kinda glazed over in bliss at the start of your blog and I missed the rest of it. Painting on mugs? Quotes? Show me some more STATIONERY!!!!!

OMGosh, I’m stricken! Seriously, it’s only been here for a bit. It’s opened since you were last here. Brave souls took their hearts in hand and opened a shop during a recession. :> And its just lovely!

      Say you forgive me?

      • 2.1.1

As long as it’s on the itinerary for the next visit, I supose I can bring myself to be gracious! Snork! Seriously, it sounds absolutely wonderful. I remember the first time I saw a Papillon (I think that’s what it was called) shop in San Francisco. It’s a chain of high class stationery stores, I saw others as I travelled around. Honestly, I was in heaven! I love the smell of stationery shops, don’t you? Everybody got stationery from me after that visit ;-)

I was there last February, Anna, and she didn’t take me, either. I have to cut her some slack, though, because she did take me to this fabbo, warehouse-sized used book store. And ship to me the numerous books I bought.

And we did go to Nora’s signing for Treachery in Death, which was an experience in itself. I bought a glass pendant that has netted me oodles of compliments.

      But the NEXT time I’m there . . .

      • 2.2.1
        Jeanne Adams says:

That was fun! Poor Anna had to go to Nora’s with me on one of the occasions when I was signing, rather than just a visit, bless her. She talked to everyone, strolled the VERY small town at least twice, and got a sunburned nose. I felt bad that she’d had to wait on me so long! :>

I don’t think I’d found the store yet when you were here Nancy. It reminds me of that one near you.

      • 2.2.2

Nancy, she took me to the Nora signing too so I can’t whinge too much. Had a great day. Did you try the ice-cream parlour? Great stuff!

        • 2.2.2.1

Jeanne, did you know I’m still in touch with some of the ladies I met that day? It was a hugely bonding experience waiting outside all day. Still snorking at you telling me you’d be there two hours at most! Yeah, right. And I’d buy a bridge from you too!

            Jeanne Adams says:

Hahahah! I know! Wasn’t that awful? I’d forgotten that Stephanie Laurens was signing with us and should have KNOWN that it would be 4-6 hours at the very least. But how cool that you still keep in touch with some of the folks you met!

We did try the ice cream parlor, but not for ice cream since the temperature was in the thirties. I think I had a mini cheesecake. Whatever, it was yummy.

This is going to be fun YAY

I will of course have one of the mugs first and I think I will have a picture of Rod Stewart put on it and saying Blondes Have More Fun (Sorry I am not very imaginative) another thing I would like on a coffee mug or glass would be the titles of some of the fabulos books I have read with the authors names. I would like a Mocha when the mugs are done in the oven and some caramel biscuit slice to go with it or a champagne flute painted with the heroes names from some great books that I have read with strawberries floating in it and some nice cheese and crackers with that.

I am going to enjoy reading everyone’s sayings and the pictures they would like on them whoo hoo

Oooh, strawberries in the champagne. I love that! Sven! Put more strawberries on the list! (everybody will want that and we don’t want to run out!)

Helen – This sounds yummy! LOL on the differences between Australian and American recipes. Just how much is 175 grams of chocolate? (Perhaps the answer is as much as you like…)

A slice tin is about 12 inches by 14 inches and not very deep maybe an inch or 2 and yes for the chocolate as much as you want and like I buy a big block of cooking chocolate and usually use half or you can use any block of chocolate you wantjust melt and spread on

What hero would make a good photo for your mug?

Well, Superman – of course – who else? :D

Got a great line or quote you’d like to put on your morning juice glass?

Good morning, Jeanne! I think it’s telling that my favorite coffee mug is bright red & emblazoned with KEEP CALM & CARRY ON. A little Winston Churchill keeps my day in perspective. As does liberal doses of caffeine. :-)

      Jeanne Adams says:

Susan, I love, love, love that saying. There was just a great article about how that became so popular recently. I can’t find that exact article, but here’s one that tells everything from the perspective of the marketing firm that’s putting it pretty much everywhere! Hahah!

Jeanne, it’s so hard to choose. As a parent, I’d go with a coffee cup that has my picture and “Because I said so” on it. And I’d give one to the dh and one to the boy.

      Jeanne Adams says:

Hahahahah! That’s outstanding, Nancy! I love it!

What character would you put on one? From a book or movie or comic book….

And whatcha want on that wine glass?

      • 12.1.1
        Nancy Northcott says:

Well, you can’t ever go wrong with Superman. In the classic suit, not the hideous one in the upcoming movie.

I mean, really, if you say “Superman,” pretty much the entire industrialized world knows what he looks like. So the point of changing his look is . . . .?!

Stepping off the soap box now.

As for wine glasses, I really like cut crystal, unadorned. I like the way the light plays on it. For decorative purposes, though, I could go with the Enterprise (Star Trek version, not US Navy).

  13. 13
    Nancy Northcott says:

I saw a wine glass in a local shop that said, “Put on your big girl panties and deal.” I think they sold out at Christmas, but I have an eye out for the restock.

  14. 14

Hey Jeanne….I’m gonna need a whole set of mugs!

#1 quote: “Homicide or chocolate. You choose!” I think I’ll put that on a hot chocolate mug.

#2 “Men, you can’t live with them and you can’tbury them in the back yard.”

#3 “Panic is NEVER your best first option.” I’ll draw a crack at the top of the mug for that one.

#4 “When the going gets tough, the tough go shopping.”

#5 “My Mama used to say: If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all. That’s why some people are never talked about.”

“You can fix sick, you can’t fix crazy.”

      • 14.1.1
        Jeanne Adams says:

Oh, Suz, I love ALL of those! The “sick” one reminds me of a t-shirt I saw at a work out place. It was one I really liked, especially while puffing on the treadmill. I kept thinking the wee skinny girls in their snug and fashionable attire were scorning my efforts. (Probably notingh of the sort, but I wasn’t caffeinated, so it’s all a consipiracy before coffee)

The shirt said: “I may be fat, but you’re ugly. And I can lose weight.”

        SNORK!!! Love that one.

        • 14.1.1.1

ooooooooooooooooooooooo I like that one, too! Can I borrow it?

          Here’s a Texas saying…interpret as you wish:

“This coffee is the only thing between you and death. Time for a refill.”

“Friends help you move. Real friends help you move bodies.” (It’s a Search & Rescue thing. Really.)

“OMG. What is that bright glowing ball in the sky?”

“There is no problem on earth which cannot be solved with the proper application of C-4.”

I have others, but they get progressively worse. *grin*

What a fantastic blog post, Jeanne! Things will really be hopping in the Lair today.

I found a quote a year or so ago which inspires me when I run into a snag in my writing, so I’d love to have it on a brightly painted mug!

“We are what we repeatedly. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” (Artistotle)

      Jeanne Adams says:

Oh, I love that one! (and I believe you left out a “DO” – as in we are what we repeatedly DO…”) Grins.

What a great time in the lair today! And a last from the past for me to see that Oberon Leatherworks journal up there. I used to work at a store that carried their stuff, and I got that same design for my DH’s address book because he’s a genealogist and needed one with a family tree. :-)

What great sayings you all have come up with! I have always wanted a mug (or shirt) that says “I am the BIG CHEESE — I don’t move for anybody!”

And your DH is a genealogist? I do that too, though not professionally. I’ve been doing it for about 25 years now. (Yes, yes, I DID start when I was about 9…yeah…that’s right….) LOVE it!

        EC Spurlock says:

Isn’t genealogy fun, Jeanne? His dad got him into it; their family came over into Jamestown in the early days and they’ve been trying to get an unbroken line back to that time, and hopefully back into England. We just unearthed a real skeleton from the family closet, a dark secret concerning his great-grandfather that we are very excited about! Great potential novel fodder. ;-)

And I’m a big fan of Oberon. We have the abovementioned address book as well as several of their checkbooks and pewter bookmarks. Love ‘em!

I have three quotes that I printed out and have stuck (with ugly, peeling, Scotch tape) on my computer armoire. They are sort of “life reminders” for me and I think they would make good mugs.

The first is a Thoreau quote: “Many men go fishing all their lives without knowing it is not fish they are after.”

The second is from St. Teresa: “Thank God for the things that I do not own.”

The third is from A. Maude Royden: “Learn to hold loosely all that is not eternal.”

That last one has been–and still is–a life-long lesson for me.

Jeanne – What a fun post! I LOVE journals – and have a ton of them. My latest has peacock feathers on the cover and a little peacock feather “eye” on each page inside. I don’t write a lot in them LOL, but I love owning them. When I do write longhand for say crafting a story, I do it in an 8 x 11 journal with a spiral binding so I can turn the cover back easily. Something about the bigger journal works best for me.

There was a time when I tried to handpaint wine glasses – took a class and everything. My idea was to create a glass for each for my books. LOL – I made one. Too much work. Love those Lolita glasses, though.

I have a great mug that says crazy catlady – that’s me lol. And definitely red wine – cabernet savignon is my favorite.

That sounds like a really neat gift shop.

My drink of choice would be iced orange juice.

Has anyone checked Ermingarde’s cave for the key? Send Paolo.

You know, I’m getting kind of worried about that key. Jeanne, has there been any word? While I don’t doubt the gladiators can break the door in, wouldn’t a locksmith be cheaper?

Either way, Sven likes to bake in Saturdays. We need that key.

        Jeanne Adams says:

Yep, we checked for the key in Ermingarde’s area. Some of the gladiators, led by Demetirus led her on a chase with a side of pork. If it hadn’t been necessary to search, I’d have liked to have seen that. Grins.

No such luck though. We found that the key Suz saw yesterday was the extra key to the Armory.

Like you, Nancy, I’m pretty worried. I really HATE to break down that door. The ironwork on it is so nice – and it’ll be hard to replace if they damage it – not to mention it’s about 3 and a half inches thick.
