Bringing You Holiday Cheer

I saw a post on social media today that made me sad. A lovely lady was having trouble getting into the holiday spirit because of all the greed, negativity and bad news in the world. I totally understand where she’s coming from. It’s hard not to get depressed if you watch the news. So I thought I’d try to spread some holiday cheer today by sharing some favorite places I like to go online to make myself smile. Think of them as virtual stocking stuffers in your virtual stockings.

The Good News Network — Have you ever said to yourself, “Surely there are good news stories out there that aren’t being covered.” Indeed there are, like the story of a Walmart cashier paying for an elderly man’s groceries when he didn’t have enough money or a little 4-year-old boy who asked for food bank donations instead of Christmas presents. There are lots of good people doing good things in the world. They just don’t get the headlines, unfortunately. I try to share lots of positive stories on my social media to counteract the litany of negativity and bad news.

Earth Porn — For some stunningly beautiful photographs of what Mother Nature has to offer, look no further.

Cute Overload — For adorable photos and videos of cute critters. I’m particularly partial to the puppies and bunnies.

Gives Me Hope — Snippets that will give you hope and restore your faith in humanity.

The Nicest Place on the Internet — Having a tough day and just need a hug? Here you can give and receive virtual hugs. It’s so simple, but it makes me smile. — Soothing and simple for when you just need a few minutes to just relax and be.

Huff Post Good News — The latest uplifting stories, like a model donning a bald cap and dressing like Cinderella to visit and take photos with a 5-year-old girl who has cancer and having a hard time with her hair falling out.

What are some of your favorite positive and fun places to visit online?

Is he staying with me ?

    Hello Trish,
Cute Emergency is a place I love to visit, so I think Cute Overload will be something I like. I visit a lot of entertainment and sports sites, but they it’s not all positive news. I enjoy the gossip and reading upcoming movies and sports news, but then there are also articles about feuds and athletes/celebrities in trouble with the law.

These sound like great places to visit I must go to them very soon I really am so busy at the moment but later tonight I will have some time

For me spending time with my grandkids makes me smile

    Have Fun

Those are terrific, thank you, Trish! I’ve been giggling at a lot of the BuzzFeed videos lately. And my kids love to visit FoxTrot’s site and flip through the archives of cartoons πŸ™‚

    • Yes, BuzzFeed! The videos where the four guys try crazy things crack me up. I think they’re called the Try Guys or something. BuzzFeed is strangely addictive.

  • Amy Conley says:

There’s this place called ROMANCE BANDITS. They always make me smile.

  • Brenda Rumsey says:

Thanks for sharing those. I get most of my “smile” moments from my author and friends post and try to share as many as I find. Kids, pets, nature, sunsets, captioned pictures… many things give me that smile.

Trish, I love this post. I’m always looking for things that will lift my spirits, and I admit that I unfollow sites that consistently post negative stuff, or stuff that makes me sad. Especially this time of year. If I can’t keep my own spirits up, I know I’m no good to anyone else either, and I might even miss an opportunity to help in some way because I’m focused on how bad I feel about something.
I’m going to like and follow all these. Thank you so much for this!

I always have a large mixture of sites on my FB page. So I do get all the horrible stories out there but then interspersed are cat videos and youtube funnies or music videos – lots of good Christmas songs out there right now!

    • There’s nothing like a funny cat video to make you smile. There are all these compilations of cats trying to make jumps and failing that is hilarious. The cats aren’t hurt, of course.

  • Deb says:

I love popping into The Lair. Good friends, good times, good smiles. I feel the same about PJ And Andrea at The Romance Dish. I will check out some of the sites; they sound great. One thing that did make me laugh today was a photo posted on FB of our 21-month-old grandson Jace with Santa. It was an epic fail, according to our daughter, Aunt Shary, who took him. He us bawling his head off!

    • Oh, no, the old Afraid of Santa photo. I feel so badly for those kids being that afraid, but the photos are undeniably funny.

And yes, PJ and Andrea are all kinds of awesome. πŸ™‚

    • pjpuppymom says:

Aw, thanks, Deb! Seeing your comments at TRD always makes me smile! πŸ™‚

Thanks to you too, Trish. The feeling is mutual! <3

Merry Christmas, Trish! I’m always on the lookout for good news so will definitely be checking out some of these sites. College girl turned me on to Daily Puppy at Instagram. Nothing gives me warm fuzzies more than adorable puppies. πŸ™‚

    • Oh, I think I’ve seen Daily Puppy too. I know lots of the Banditas are cat people and I like cats too, but I adore puppies. I just want to rub all their fat little bellies.

  • Trish, what a great list – and I don’t know some of those although I regularly visit places like the Huffington Post. I’ve got to say a good cat video never fails to make me laugh – don’t judge me. Well, you can, and then when you’ve done that, check out this cat in a shark suit sitting on a Roomba chasing a duck. The world clearly isn’t all bad!

  • Okay, I am cracking up at the Roomba riding sharkcat! SO funny!!

And like Amy, I can always, always count on a visit to the Romance Bandits Lair to make me smile. So much fun, laughter and love of romance. It’s like a daily book club meeting.

I love Huff Post Good News. Renews my faith in humanity.

A friend signed me up for a daily e-mail called I HAZ A HOT DOG. It features great photos of dogs in all sorts of situations with hilarious captions.

  • Trish, I like the National Trust FB page and the Dept. of the Interior feed on Twitter. They always have beautiful photos. So does Biltmore Estate.

    • Good sites, Nancy. I think you know I’m a huge National Parks fan, so I love photos from them. A number of them have web cams too, such as the Old Faithful webcam at Yellowstone. You can watch the eruptions live.

  • Trish –

What an excellent post! I’ve not heard of any of those places, but I’ll check them out. I try NOT to live on the internet so I can’t give you any suggestions of uplifting websites. I spend most of my internet time on – which I strongly encourage you not to visit unless you need to πŸ™‚ .

But for this time of year, when I need to feel good, I take a cue from my cat. I lie on the floor near the Christmas day and look at the lights (and bat an ornament or two). I’ve never seen the cat stressed so I figure it must work πŸ™‚

    Merry Christmas!

There is a Facebook page for Down Syndrome Awareness. They post beautiful pictures of smiling DS kids. Seeing those kids smile just makes my day!
