Farewell, 2014

Wow! Can you believe today is the end of 2014?  I can’t.  It’s been a wonderful, exciting year filled with joys and challenges, mixed together with a myriad of successes and failures, ups and downs… You know, a typical year LOL.  I do enjoy the way the years wind up, a big holiday rush and then the quiet aftermath that says goodbye to the old and holds so much perky possibilities for the new.   I’m curious -do you celebrate the new year with a big blow out party?  Or with a quiet night at home?  Crowds or intimate groups?

Angels We Have Heard

According to Luke, angelic voices sang the birth of the world’s saviour over two thousand years ago.  The story is lovely, whatever your personal beliefs:  an infant born in a cave among the animals, the shepherds awed by the heraldry, the wise men’s travel from afar to see a miracle. Whatever an angel means to you – a loved one, long gone; God’s winged creature protecting you; a symbol of hope, love and charity – angels surround us every day. It’s easiest for me to see angels in the faces of children, innocent and untouched as yet by life’s trials

On the Road Again…

When you have no family in town, you spend a lot of your precious vacation time in the car.  There’s even a name for this sort of travel–it’s call the “oblivacation,” a mash-up of obligation and vacation.  As I type this, we’re pulling ourselves together from a lovely week spent in Omaha with the Sey side of the family.  I’m doing all the last minute things we do to get ready for the six-hour road trip home–searching out the Christmas presents (which the kids have flung far & wide), gathering up our pie dishes & cookie tins, & seeking out the

Snippets from Christmas Day at the Ferrell’s

Amid the chaos that happens in a house with five kids under the age of seven, twin babies and a puppy just over a year old on Christmas Day, I found time to enjoy and observe the family (sometimes known as the thundering horde that invades my peaceful domain–said with great love and affection). So I thought I’d share some of that evening with you. The meal was lovely and we noted more eating was taking place at the adult table and lots of giggling was happening over at the kids’ table. This could be that the kids were having

And Ode to BBC America, or How I Get my Brit Fix

While watching the Doctor Who Christmas special on Christmas night, I thought about how much I’ve really enjoyed the programming on BBC America since I gained access to the station. The shows have good writing and acting, are set in locales that are different than a lot of American television, and I just love hearing how Brits talk, all the varying and interesting accents. So I thought I’d share a list of my favorite BBC shows and ask you to share the same if you’re a fan. 1. Doctor Who — About a Time Lord traveling through space and time

The Balance Sheet 2014

I hope everyone who celebrated Christmas had a merry one and those of you who didn’t had a relaxing day.  The time between Thanksgiving and Christmas seems like a mad dash, full of chaos that has to be dealt with at an ever-accelerating pace.  Then, suddenly, it’s December 25.  Everything here hits a full stop.  And the quiet gives rise to reflection. When I was in grad school, I saw a cross-stitch pillow kit in a craft store window.  The pillow had holly on it along with this rhyme: Never a Christmas morning/Never an old year ends/But somebody thinks of

Christmas Book Exchange, Plus Contest News

Thank you so much for joining our informal little holiday fete. We offered to give the cabana boys the day off, but the sweet lads couldn’t think of anywhere else they’d rather be. They’ve brought several large, cushy sectionals into the Lair, their glistening muscles softly lit by the twinkling lights on our beautiful tree. There’s a variety of finger foods over by the fireplace. It’s a potluck, so I hope you brought a dish to share. It’s a very low-key sort of festive, the perfect setting for our virtual Christmas Book Exchange. It’s sort of like Secret Santa, Bandita
