What’s A Picture Worth?

What’s a picture worth?  1000 words?  $100,000 if it’s blackmail-able?  And what if it’s simply a picture in your mind, because you forgot the camera? This year’s RWA conference was a combination of all of the above, and each photo seems to speak for itself.  I thought it’d be fun to take a quick jaunt through a few captioned moments 🙂 There’s nothing like starting conference with a bang, or in this case a slurp.  What can I say, my flight was delayed two hours, it was hot when we arrived and, well, I love me a good margarita 🙂

Perception and Reality

When I was a younger teacher in my early forties, our English Department Coordinator died suddenly of a stroke.  She was fifty years old.  Lori was a formidable woman, both loved and revered on campus, but also feared. She was the final authority on all things pertaining to the English language – curriculum and text books, reading lists and grammar construction.  We all stood a bit in awe of her. About a decade later, when I was appointed Department Coordinator of the same group of English teachers, I remembered Lori and how stolid and authoritative she had been. She was

There’s No Place Like Home

There truly is no place like home.  And you know what makes you really appreciate home?  A vacation! And yes, while home is where the heart is, it cannot be denied that vacation is where the restaurant food, hotel beds and far-away friends are. And I just spent a week in the company of my beloved writer friends.  We laughed, we ate, we brainstormed & plotted, we dressed up, we dressed down & we hung out.  And it was so good for my soul. More happened than I can possibly recap for you, but here are a handful of snapshots

The Best Laid Plans

No, I’m not talking about Robert Burns or John Steinbeck today. In fact, today I’m not going to do much talking at all. See, this is my usual day to blog. But you all know that. And being it’s the day after I got back from RWA National Conference, my well laid plan was to give you lots of images of the past week. HOWEVER. That’s not happening either. See, I just spent the past 6 hours (this is Sunday night as I write this) at the hospital with my daughter Lyndsey and her hubby, while we tried to keep

There’s Got To Be a Morning After…

And if you think this blog post is about hangovers, you are CORRECT! You win a large, very cold glass of water and two regular aspirin, followed by a breakfast of scrambled eggs, biscuits, hashbrowns and bacon (my favorite hangover cure). Actually, I prefer country ham, but you can’t always get that at your local greasy spoon. Oh, and you really need a side of grits to soak up the alcohol in your stomach, if you can get them. So, why the focus on hangovers today? Well, lest we forget, SOME Banditas (and Buddies) spent last night at RWA’s RITA

Notes From a Virtual Tourist

It’s really quiet in the Lair.  Dismally quiet.  Roughly half of the banditas are in San Antonio at RWA.  They occasionally report in about how much fun they’re having. *sigh* Sven, Demetrius, and Zach are rotating their guys for days off and doing basic repairs around the Lair.  Sven is polishing the silver.  I didn’t realize we had quite so much of it–platters, candlesticks, serving utensils, vases, even a soup tureen! And the Golden Rooster is griping because no one is paying attention to him in between his visits to our various buddies who’ve  graciously put up with, er, hosted

Launch Party and Giveaway… KateCarlisle.com

Here in the Lair, launch parties are usually for book releases, but today we’re celebrating the launch of my fabulous new website design! And to add to the party atmosphere, I’m giving away an autographed copy of THE BOOK STOPS HERE. Whoop! Whoop! An author’s website is a Very Big Deal. www.KateCarlisle.com is my home on the web. It must accurately represent me and my books. Every word, every image, every color sends a message to readers, whether they realize it or not. And so my goal is to make sure that the message is true, that the expectation my

I Met Her…Online

Last week I drove to another town to meet a friend I’d never seen in person. I made this friend online. Now let me explain that there’s a little deeper connection than it would seem at first. April has been on the fringes of my world for a long while through our mutual friend, Dianna Love. She’s a fan of Dianna’s books, and I “met” her through correspondence on Dianna’s behalf a few years ago. And that brings up a whole question of its own, doesn’t it? Have you truly “met” someone, if you’ve only met them online? I still
