Stupid Mistakes

There’s been considerable flurry in the news recently of big-time mistakes people have made in relation to money or valuable items.  One man had a garage sale while his wife was in the hospital delivering a baby.  He later discovered that she’d put her engagement ring in a box for safe keeping during her stay.  He sold the box, apparently believing the ring was costume jewelry.  Fortunately, the kind recipient discovered and returned the ring.  Clearly men don’t pay attention to the jewelry they buy us! I don’t know what the deal is about garage sales (often called yard sales here

Slumber party!

So I have a house full of girls tonight.  Yep. We’re having a slumber party.   It’s nobody’s birthday or anything.  We’re just lucky enough to be part of a circle of families that all have two girls about the same ages as ours, & it’s become our routine to swap overnights every so often.  The kids love it, & the parents get a date night that doesn’t end until after breakfast.  Which is awesome.   Because when you’ve been married with kids for ten-plus years, you sort of forget what it’s like to wake up when you’re done sleeping

Writing About What You Know.

Writing About What You Know. That’s one of the recommendations you get from writing teachers, editors, friends. My first book was an American Historical. Set in my own country’s history, I had a good idea about life back then, but had to research a lot. When I switched over to writing The Surrender of Lacy Morgan, I didn’t really tap into my own experience, but definitely into some fantasies. (TMI? Oh well, now you know.) So what experience did I use to write the Romantic Suspense books? I’ve never been KIDNAPPED or HUNTED by a hitman. Setting: Both books take

Allie Burton’s YA Paranormal Debut!

One of the perks in being a Romance Bandit is getting to introduce our readers to new authors and their stories. If that author happens to be one of the nicest people you will ever meet and a dear friend…well that’s just bonus points for all of us. So today, dear readers and fellow Bandits, I’m bringing some fresh talent to visit, my good friend and debut YA paranormal author, Allie Burton! Suz: Welcome, Allie! Pull up a bar stool. Since it’s early in the day, I’ve asked Sven to have your favorite caffeine beverage Diet Pepsi on board for

Rooted in a Small Town

Have you noticed that small towns are really popular in romance right now?  The one I most recently discovered is Jill Shalvis’s Lucky Harbor.  Nora Roberts has Hawkins Hollow, Lunacy, and St. Christopher’s, to name just a few.  Virginia Kantra has Dare Island.  These places have distinct identities, but the people in all of them share a strong sense of community.  They also know, gossip about, criticize, and help each other. I grew up in a small town, Davidson, North Carolina (population 1200 when the college students weren’t in residence), and it was like those communities.  I knew if I

First Edition, Second Thoughts

In May, a first edition copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone sold for 150,000 pounds at Sotheby’s auction house in London. 227,421 US dollars. 252,472 Australian dollars. A big, honkin’ wad of cash in any currency! You know I’m a book geek, right? I mean, I write the Bibliophile Mystery series, for goodness’ sakes, which is all about a crime-solving bookbinder. But would I be willing to pay almost a quarter of a million dollars for a book that’s not even twenty years old?   Yeah. In a heartbeat. I would if I could. If I were a

2013 RAGT

Earlier this month I attended a reader conference that was a total blast.  Suzanne Ferrell and I both signed at the 9th annual  Lori Foster, Duffy Brown, and Linda Keller’s  Reader and Author Get-together (RAGT, for short) on June 6 – 9th.  That’s Lori on the left.  Unfortunately, she broke her elbow earlier in the year and was still in that protective brace.  She looked a bit like a bionic woman – half-human/half-machine, doesn’t she? RAGT is always held at the same hotel in West Chester, Ohio – a little burb outside of Cincinnati, Ohio.  It’s has gotten so big,

Karen Kelley is SMOKING HOT!

Hi Everyone! I’m thrilled Donna asked me back again. The Romance Bandits are so much fun! And I have a new book out, Smoking Hot. There’s a lot of spice between the covers. It’s more than just a smoking hot read, though. The story line is one close to my heart. It’s about family obligation. I bet each one of you knows about that. Am I right? So does Raine McCandless, the heroine in Smoking Hot. She loves the excitement of patrolling the streets on Fort Worth’s North side where the landscape is skid-row bars and gang graffiti. Law enforcement
