Down South Pecan Pie

This recipe is the one my mother has made my entire life. She has no idea where it came from, but it’s the one my grandmother makes as well and it is good, y’all. 9- or 1-inch pie shell (I cheat and use Pillsbury All-Ready Pie Crust) 1/2 c. butter (the real stuff) 1/2 c. white sugar 3/4 c. white corn syrup 1/4 c. maple syrup (real if you can get it) 3 eggs, slightly beaten 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract 1 cup pecans Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Cream butter well. Add sugar to butter slowly, creaming until

Darynda Jones and the Grim Reaper….

HAPPY HALLLLLOWEEEEN!!! Hey everyone! Hope you’re having a wonderful All Hallow’s Eve! I know I usually talk about pumpkins and leaves and trickertreating and all that, but I thought I’d change it up a bit and invite The Grim Reaper. Bwahahahaha! Actually, I’m inviting the wonderful DARYNDA JONES, and her fabulous character, Charley Davidson, AKA The Grim Reaper. Darynda started this journey with a Golden Heart win with FIRST GRAVE ON THE RIGHT, then once published hit the USA Today Bestsellers list, and the New York Times Bestsellers list, then won a Daphne du Maurier award and a Rita. Whew!

Don’t Fool with Mother Nature

Remember that old commercial for Chiffon Margarine?  The one that says, “it’s not nice to fool Mother Nature”? It seems Mother Nature has been giving all of us puny mortals a run for our money lately.  And now Frankenstorm Sandy is bearing down on the east coast with all the fury of a woman scorned.  I grew up in Virginia and remember well the frightening hurricane Hazel.  I’d never seen or been in a storm like that before.  Of course, we lost power, but more scary to me was when the power line in our driveway snapped and began whipping

Best Birthday Ever.

So I had a significant birthday recently.  I won’t get into details, I’ll just assure you it ended with a zero & it makes me officially…not young anymore.   I’ve got to say, though, gift wise?  This birthday was a tremendous success.   Now normally I’m not much of a gift girl.  I’m much more interested in the cake & ice cream.  Top it with a gift card to Barnes & Noble, & we’re good here.   This was, however, a Significant Birthday.  (Did I mention?)  And my family (the one I was born into, not the one I made)

The Joy of Giving

I adore autumn. Not just for the changing of the leaves or the cooler temperature, both of which I do love, but because it is the beginning of the holiday season in the US and in particularly my family. I have two children with birthdays in October, one grandchild with a birthday in November and one in January. Christmas is on it’s way, too. Most importantly though, my birthday and my mother’s birthday are one week apart in November.   When I was a kid, I loved fall for the reasons above, but mostly because I had a birthday after months with no birthdays in

The Fangover

It just wouldn’t be October without ghost, ghouls, and vampires. So today, let’s welcome Kathy Love and Erin McCarthy who are here to talk about a book they co-wrote, The Fangover. Thanks, Christy and The Romance Bandits for having Erin and I here today.  We are really excited about the upcoming book we wrote together called THE FANGOVER, which is out on November 6th. It’s  the story of a vampire band, The Impalers, who arise the evening  after attending the Irish wake of one of their band members  only to realize none of them remembers a thing that happened after

A Clear and Elegant Ping

Remember the sound a crystal goblet makes when a metal object lightly taps it? That clear ping carries over a roomful of people talking. It’s an elegant sound, a pure and beautiful sound. Only crystal makes it. Glass produces more of a thunk than a ping. The glass may be beautiful, but it doesn’t yield the same kind of sound.  Similarly, a book or a movie or a musical composition can also be extremely good without quite generating the inner ping, that extra measure of delight that comes from reading or seeing or hearing something that flows almost perfectly.  One

Hibernation Preparation

Hibernation sounds like a really good idea to me. Gee, maybe I should lay around for months “conserving energy.” (Yeah, yeah, that’s what we’ll call it! Conserving energy… SNORK!!!!) No argument from me. If there were an Olympic event for conserving energy, I’d be a contender. But of course, our hibernation preparation would be a little different than, say, a bear’s. How a Bibliophile Prepares for Winter 1. Build a cozy nest. Place a nice, big, cushy chair or sofa near in the spot where you get the best light for reading. Find the perfect lap blanket for your winter
