Meet KJ Howe

How long have you been writing, and how has your writing changed over time? I’ve been writing for about ten years.  I started with pure romance, but dead bodies kept peppering the text. LOL I soon realized that action and pacing were my strengths—not surprising given my love of travel, intrigue, and adventure.  I wrote a novel about a female sniper and found my home.  Now I’m hard at work on a novel about a female kidnap negotiator.  But please don’t give up on me romance fans, as romance still features prominently in my books.  Nothing is better than sex

Celebrating the Leap with Annie-isms!

I have to confess I’d hoped to have my latest release launched today — FRAIL BLOOD, an historical thriller from Amazon — but looks like it’s going to be next week. See the gorgeous cover?  Isn’t it lover-ly?  Bandita Suzanne Ferrell’s talented daughter Lyndsey did the cover for me.  Isn’t she amazing!  And the courthouse that’s shown in the background comes courtesy of the Placer County Museum in Auburn, California. Since I’ve felt a little blue from not getting my book live by my deadline, I spent some time thinking about what I habitually do to cheer myself up.  I’m normally

Self Induced Pain

No, this is not a talk about S&M. Darn, right? Hehehe As many of you know my dreaded night job, henceforth known as the DNJ, is delivering babies. Much to the surprise of not only my patients, but other nurses and my own children, this is a very, very physical job. Not only am I on my feet a lot, some nights for hours at a time, but I do a lot of lifting and pulling. There’s equipment to move, patients on beds or gurneys to get from place to place, and when the patient is completely numb from the

Dream Big

So I achieved a milestone recently.  It wasn’t anything quite as awesome as Kate’s hitting the NYT bestseller list (go, Kate!) but it was a milestone nonetheless.  One of which I am ridiculously proud.  See, I recently blurbed a book.  (This means I provided the little quote on the cover telling the world what a really great book it was, for those of you who don’t speak writer-ese.)  See?  There it is!  Over there, on the cover on the left!  I know it’s a little hard to see, but click on the cover to see it live & in person

Music for the Moment

Our family lost a friend this week, and thinking of him led me to the idea for this blog.  I met Chris during my early days in comic book fandom.  We belonged to the same apa (amateur press alliance–kind of like a fat chain letter but with closed circulation), and he invited a bunch of us to stay with him during the Atlanta Fantasy Fair, a forerunner of Dragon*Con.  The last day of the con, he and I made an ATM run.  The song “Walking on Sunshine” by Katrina and the Waves, their only hit, came on the radio.  Chris

Goal Achieved. How Did that Happen?

I’ve discovered something about myself – I am as riddled with self-doubt as Bonnie and Clyde were with bullet holes. I realized this month that I don’t spend much time basking in my accomplishments; I almost immediately go to the dark side, wondering what will happen when people realize I’m receiving honors I don’t deserve.   Last week, I broke the top 20 on the New York Times bestsellers list. This has been a goal of mine for years, and I did it! I hit #15 with my latest Bibliophile Mystery, ONE BOOK IN THE GRAVE. I had hit the

Meet Bev Irwin aka Kendra James

Please welcome debut author Bev Irwin to the Lair.  I had the pleasure of meeting Bev through the Toronto Romance Writers, and I’m thrilled that she has been successful in her dream.  Bev will share with us her journey and how she survived the bumps along the way.  One lucky commenter will win a copy of Bev’s book!!! Hello to all from Bev in London, Ontario! Today, I thought I’d like to talk about first contracts, and the dreaded rejection letter. My story is pretty much the same as every other author. I have that undeniable need to put my

Gotta Love February!

The other night I went to Pilates class wearing a lightweight long sleeve Tshirt that proudly proclaims that I’m a Hopeless Romantic.  Yeah, that’s true.  I’m both hopeless (especially in Pilates) and romantic :-).  Thus I consider February as a sort of honored month as it’s synonomous with Valentine’s Day. However, when I was reminded that Mardi Gras is celebrated in February, and that National Margarita Day was yesterday (the same day as the beginning of Lent – was that astute planning, or what?), I wondered what other causes might be celebrated in February.  Let’s face it – you gotta
